whatever you do and wherever you stay, you will be selling yourself short if you don't go fishing for bonefish on the flats.

The bonefish fishery is pretty good but there are better places that are less of a hassle. Avalon is outrageously priced and Cayo Coco can be a pain in the dick if you don't have a good guide. Some of the guides outside of Avalon don't have their own boats and wading some of the flats can be tricky.

Their grand slam fishing might be the best in the world if catching a slam is what you're into.

Cuba isn't exactly some well kept secret. People from all over the world have been fly fishing those flats for decades. Cuba doesn't hold monster bones nor are the numbers as high as a place like Belize. I would go to Andros for bones before Cuba, it's cheaper and less communist. Plus the bones are bigger and the opportunity for Tarpon is still there.

used to go there for work quite a bit, good food, dirt cheap, people are nice but they are scared as shite for being caught fraternizing with us filthy capitalist pigs, you can get a house, cook, maid, sex slave, car w/driver, groceries/liquor/beer/wine for a month for just a few hundred bucks(USD)

. It was very depressing.

well, looking at Cuba from the eyes of a college kid going there with some sort of romantic Hemingway type of dreams is certainly going to be a bit disillusioned by what they see versus what they envisioned, I've gotten around a bit and Cuba is just fine by me, hell anyplace that is touted as a vacation getaway type place outside of the contiguous 48 can be a little depressing if you get off the beaten path and see how the locals live

I was there 57 years ago. It was beautiful. We stayed at my grandparent's estate (no longer exists). Looking forward to returning to Cuba soon.

My dad was stationed there back in 1995 when they got hit by hurricane.

He was less dramatic about it.
