Not sure if you've worked in Texas before but at low 50's you are probably looking at around $1,400 every two weeks (take home) after taxes/insurance/401K etc. You may want to work with an apartment locater service and see what they can find. Don't get strapped so bad you don't have any party money left.

That's almost exactly what my take home will be. And yes, I want to have extra funds to have fun for sure.

Don't rule out Addison, it's awesome and a 20-30 minute commute (or less) to downtown. Plus it's cheaper.

Lots of young professionals living there.
ie: where I lived while single.

Greenville/ M streets area or near Knox-Henderson. If you are single, Knox-Henderson area is definitely the way to go

I live in Lower Greenville area and it's true that Lower Greenville has made a big come back from all the bars/ restaurants going under and everything being empty a few years ago. Knox/Henderson is walkable from lower Greenville and has a lot of bars/ restaurants. Right now, there are lots of new apts being built in this area and you can walk to most anything in this area. Uptown is still the area to go out if you are young, single and fratty....as I guess you are by your name. But it is expensive over there.

I have been here for 5 months now and live right at 75 and Meadow in Preston Hollow. I am a mile from NorthPark Mall and 5 miles from uptown. My rent is half the price of everything uptown and I am still pretty close to everything. Uber rides are always cheap and quick. I love my area. (rich area but has older places that are still cheap)

This.

Also talk to a rental agent. There are tons of duplexes and 4-plexes in the M-streets area.

You'd be surprised what you can find on the fringes of Highland Park as well.

ETA:

Check out all the new places going up on Ross at 75. That area is growing right now.

Why would anyone making 50K a year wish to live near the M streets or Highland park where the average household income is $375,000.

RENTING, not buying. There are a lot of people who have fixed places up for rental properties MSteets.

Lots of rentals avail around SMU as well.

ETA:

I lived in downtown for years. Have lots of service industry friends living in those areas. If a bartender/cocktail waitress can afford it - So can this guy.

I'm tryin' man.

FWIW - I live in a house in the 'burbs now, too.

Still single... Just don't want the party constantly ending up at my place like it used to.

I live in the very small part of South Irving that isn't scary. Right behind the Horse Track.

Travel time to downtown for me is anywhere from 15 to 40 minutes, depending on traffic.

We are in Las Colinas. South Irving is basically unliveable. I was down there at the courthouse to vote a few weeks ago and it was terrible, We just sold our house and are moving to Frisco because of ISDs for the kiddo due next year.

Whatever.

My lot is about an acre. We have a well on property so we can water our grass and wash cars all summer long for free.

I lived in North End and Post Coles Corner and loved both of them, especially north end since it's right by American Airlines center and never had to pay for parking for games

I'll be moving to Dallas area soon too. GF working in Plano. Thinking about living in Addison. Not too far from work or play.

Would prefer to not live in a party complex but want all the amenities. Any recommendations?

The 3 places IN Dallas proper that I lived were middle of downtown, Oak Lawn, and Knox/Henderson... Outside of those areas - I don't know much.

I didn't care for living in Uptown and moved over to off of Lower Greenville in the M streets. If you can get a house to rent or one of the newer town homes being built near the park I'd try for that. You have everything you need in walking distance there.

Knox/Henderson has apartments and town homes that are fairly nice and aren't too expensive on both sides of 75.

There have also been a ton of apartments and town homes built near Deep Ellum in the last few years that might be worth looking into. I work down in that area and its really cleaned up the last several years. The Farmers Marker is right nearby and there are quite a few places there to live as well.

I have a friend that lives downtown in one of the old department stores that has been converted to an apartment building and thats also a pretty cool area to live in. Downtown has gradually been picking up even though its still kind of dead.

Suggested Ross at 75.

My roommate and I were the 3rd ones to rent at Park at Farmer's Market when it opened.

Probably plenty of vacancies along Park Lane, east of 75.

Just be sure to avoid stepping in the ebola-saturated vomit.
