My mom does it so I have that perspective (even though she works in the school system and that doesn't interest me in the least) and this semester I am interning at an outpatient clinic. I like what I do, but the loans scare the shite out of me. Would PTA be a dumb thing to do? Cheaper, but less pay. But also less responsibility.

Don't let the loans scare you.

If private school is your only option, do travel PT for 2-3 years and you'll have them gone in no time.

Don't do PTA, decreases your earning potential significantly, but your opportunities much more so. It's nearly impossible for a PTA to start a business, while a PT can have several PTAs subcontracting underneath them.

LSU NOLA grad.

2nd year is the worst, but only because of the massive amount of projects/busy work.

It's a good school. The ortho guy there is very good and was loved by all in my class.

Regardless of school, you will be as good of a PT as you want to be.

That's the thing though, I'm not too worried about earning potential. I require very little (as does the SO). We are very simple in our needs and she will be an RN. I definitely don't want to start a business either. If I can be comfortable by my own standards, I'm fine.

Thanks man. And even though I don't need to reel in 70k to feel comfortable, what is the realistic hourly rate for a PTA in your experience? Cause I don't want to be broke either.

I like following your posts because it reminds me of all my years of career searching. I finally settled into education, but health care was something I researched very closely.

I'm still considering PTA, speech path, or something along those lines as a second career once I've got my years in.

I've been out for a year in May and most of my classmates make between 30 and 35 an hour. There are outliers but most fall in that range.

Go with PT if you can get in. You will have double the earning potential with a doctorate degree vs an associate degree.

Nosaj, I know in home health I pay my PTA about 40$/visit before taxes. In outpatient or hospital settings I'm not real sure, but I would think you'd start at least 40-45k/year?

Call me crazy, but I could deal with that. I know the benefits of doing PT because of earning potential etc., but I don't need much. Do you think I could get a higher rate for being a guy?

Really not sure. A lot of PTAs contract out to multiple facilities part time or PRN for better rates for like 10-15 hours a week each and do that at a few different places. I used to contract as a PT but got a nice role at a good clinic and a steady HH gig on the side so I just spend about 45 hours a week between the two.
