My mother-in-law's dog ran away earlier this week, and she enlisted the help of the Pet Amber Alert website....and also plastered posters all in her neighborhood with the "Pet Amber Alert" emblazoned across the top.

Posters quickly came down and several nasty-grams showed up in her mailbox, saying Amber alerts are for kids only....and that comparing a lost dog to a young girl who was raped and murdered is deplorable.

Any dog-only families on here? Any kids-only?

shite has been comical from my POV because my mother-in-law is out there.

How does the pet amber alert work? I get messages on my phone about missing kids. If I get a message about some ladies missing Lhasa Apso, I'm going to be pissed.

Please show me where she compares a dog to a child. Just because she uses an alert system for pets doesn't mean she is comparing them to a lost child or something. Human race is so fricking stupid.

Of course no one should receive an alert text for this unless they sign up for it. Neighborhoods could connect with one another and so forth. May be more effective if pet owners took better care and awareness of their pet and ensure they do not escape.

To some people they are. What is wrong with them having their own amber alert system?

I'll be honest, I pay more attention to lost dog notices than most amber alerts

Probably because 99% of amber alerts around here are Mexican fathers trying to steal their own children.

Do you even know how the Amber alert system came to be?

Well I must say having a text alert saying there is an amber alert for a white 10 pound poodle last seen taking a dump may be alittle funny.

That's where I take issue. We run the risk of people just outright ignoring Amber Alert texts if we start sending them out for missing dogs. Sorry grandma, Scruffy is gone.

Most of these kid Amber Alerts involve parental custody issues.

Dogs are awesome. But they aren't kids. You don't put down your kids when they get bad off.

As a society, when did we become so easily offended by everything? Especially by things that should not be controversial? Perhaps the creators of the pet amber alert network should have chosen a more unique name. However, I'm sure they only thought of it an instantly recognizable term for a lost love one. In that regard it isn't insensitive to parents with lost children, but perhaps is poor judgment as some people do get worked up when they see such a warning.

Many people consider their pets as fur babies, dog children, and so forth. The bond these people share is very real for them. Even if you have never had the same type of bond with a pet, you would think others could see that these animals have some level of intrinsic value.
