People who try to wave you through at intersections

Why don't people understand that in this case, being nice and courteous can also be extremely dangerous? In effect, they're asking you to turn over your personal safety to their judgment and their sense of time/distance/speed. The most egregious is when there's an oncoming lane of traffic and you're stopped with your left blinker on waiting to turn across the oncoming traffic and the person on the other side holds his position and waves you through. Don't they understand that they're also blocking your line of sight? I ALWAYS turn down their polite (but very dangerous) offer.
I am the only person in charge of my personal safety, and turning that responsibility over to a perfect stranger is ill-advised. It's a cultural thing to be polite and I get that, but there's a time and place for everything. "Just trust me".

I wave at them to go and then slowly creep forward. It's like a game of chicken that freaks people out.

I went once when somebody waved me through and had a very close call. Ever since then, I just wait.

No one makes you go when they wave you through. Either trust them, or don't.

Never seen anybody wave people except at a 4-way, where it's pretty harmless as long as you're paying attention.

My favorite is the running trails around where I live. I understand people are trying to be nice, but sometimes it's just faster for you to make the turn onto the road instead of waving me (the runner) through the intersection. You have the right of way, I've stopped running, and by the time you wave, you could have just gone and we both would have been on our way. I've gotten to the point where I'll stop 20 yards back from the road and adamantly wave them through and a car will still stop and wave at me to go . And the whole time, I probably could have kept running and if they would have just gone, they would have made the turn before I even got there, but people are stupid.

Someone told me a long time ago that drivers who wave people through at intersections (or pedestrians at cross walks) are liable if something happens. I doubt this is actually true/enforceable, but it stuck with me. I never wave for people to go. I just stare them down til they get the message.

Why? Apparently you all are shitty drivers who are trying to get me killed.

I've done it and I've benefitted from others doing it.
Just use common sense, and usually it's more of a final "you can see a little better than me" thing, not an "I'm going to make a totally blind turn relying on your assessment thing."
Obviously I'm not trusting someone for the latter, but if I can see the top of a hill but can't really see the bottom, and the dude who can is looking and gives me the thumbs up, sure I'll inch out there most likely.

My personal favorite is Baton Rouge's love of blocking driveways near a red light so people trying to get out into traffic get stuck, then waiting and holding up traffic once the light turns green to let them in.
DON'T BLOCK frickING DRIVEWAYS AND THIS DOESN'T HAPPEN!
The best thing to happen to Baton Rouge would be an IQ test and a driving test, with the people scoring in the bottom half and their kids getting pruned from the tree of life.

I am defending in a lawsuit for allegedly doing this.

I flash my lights. Too much uncertainty in the hand wave..they could be giving a salutation, goodbye or maybe having a seizure. IDFK

I wave all the time at an intersection in front of my house if I tie another person to the 4 way stop.
When it's clearly my turn though, I go quickly.

Back when I was defending a lot of auto cases, I referred to it as "The wave of death".

When we were about 16 or so, I was riding with a friend and we were pulling out of a McDonalds and turning left. We had to cross a lane of traffic to do so. The trafic was stopped at a light and a lady left a hole for us up to pull through. She stopped, waved us through, and wham we were slammed by a car we couldn't see.

I remember my friend telling the cop that it wasn't his fault because a lady in a van waved us through. Ha. Nope, still his fault.

That is very catchy, very theatrical. What a shyster!

He sued me using one of my best friend's dad as a lawyer, and my future boss at my first job defended me. He reconvened. I had no idea the suit part happened until I started working there and stumbled on the file. I was served domiciliary, and my parents never told me.
