Move to a better neighborhood?

I have never had this problem in multiple states I have lived in and never once lived in an HOA.
All it takes is that 1 shitty neighbor. And it's silly to pretend you know moving into a neighborhood with 100% certainty you won't have that 1 shitty neighbor. And if you do, there's nothing you can do about it.

It may not be for everyone, but as someone else said, it's an insurance policy against shitty neighbors.

My town doesn't even have neighborhoods, so we don't have to deal with the Jones' at all.

Generally speaking HOA's are a waste of money.

Why let someone else tell you what you can and can't do with your property?

Ours used HOA dues to build baseball fields, soccer fields, a few parks and a few pools in the neighborhood, as well maintain landscaping of common areas, host parties for subdivisions, hire police security, etc.

I am happy to pay our dues, but ours is well managed. I can imagine HOAs in a state like LA where corruption is tradition might suck.

I love all the people that chose to live in a HOA neighborhood then go on to hate everything. It's not the 50s to 70s anymore, cities aren't building neighborhoods private builders are. Your choice is either deal with the city in older neighborhoods, deal with an HOA, or deal with the county in the country. Acting like you aren't 'dealing' with someone is just ignorant.

Speaking of "move to a better neighborhood...

I've lived in 3 houses with HOA dues since 2009, and I've never experienced one issue like you're claiming.

It may not be technically, but I feel that I basically am paying to ensure my neighbors will keep up their end of the bargain and not mess with my home value by having a piece of shite looking house/yard right next to mine.

Something I never thought of...do HOAs really start AFTER a neighborhood has been established?

And if so, can you be forced into one by some neighborhood vote or something?

So if I hire an architect to design an addition for a plot of land I own, and pay for construction with cash from my bank account, on what grounds should my neighbor have in making sure it doesn't happen because they don't like it?

Stuff like that would drive me crazy.

That's fine. Also, your neighbor himself has no grounds to do stop you from doing it, technically speaking.

Now, what if your neighbor wants to do the same, and it's a really shitty add on that looks really bad? Or what if your neighbor just doesn't take care of his shite, then what?

I don't have a problem paying the $850/year as they mow all the median grass and greenspace grass, plant flowers, sprinkler systems, maintain brick walls along major streets, 2 pond maintenance, stock ponds with fish, 2 pools with lifeguards, many playgrounds, tennis courts, holiday decorations, security company that drives by once a day, and covers trash pickup.

My problem is the letters I've gotten in the 3 years. One time we had 3 different contractors at the house, new roof, new flooring, and new fascia and soffit boards and gutters. So all had their sign out in the yard. We are only allowed 1 sign other than home security sign to be displayed. I had ADT and LSU sign and the contractor signs were up for 3 days.

The second letter was that I put my trash out at 5:30pm the day before collection. Rules state 6pm or after.

You also need to get approvals before any work is done to the outside of the home. We had a leaky roof and needed a new roof ASAP. Had to get approval for shingle type and color and that takes 45 days but if want it within 5 days need to pay $150.00

Needing approval for a new roof that takes 45 days to get?

Yea, that's a bit much for an HOA. I just got a new roof when I moved into my latest house, no issues like that, didn't have to consult the HOA either.

Just like the previous poster stated.... in the subdivisions that have HOA's that I have lived in, if you do not pay your dues you will have a lien filed against your property.... pay them now, or pay them later, either way the HOA will get your money

Many HOA's have an approval process for certain types of building construction. If my neighbor doesn't like it they can get the HOA involved and stop construction. I mean do I really own my property at that point?

There's standard city ordinances for nuisance properties, a process that doesn't involve HOA's.

Having said that, people try to put up an HOA for every hood now, and it's brewed a bunch of entitled, stuck up neighbors, who feel it is the right to nose into everyone's business. They also feel it is their right since they are on the HOA board, to tell everyone how to keep up their yard and house.

I agree which is why I volunteered for my HOA board. Change comes from within baw

I should clarify, you are allowed like 4 colors of shingles. If you go with those you are fine. We wanted a colonial slate color with owen corning tru duration shingle. We paid $75 for expedited 10 days (or $150 for 5 days) for approval, but I called twice a day and it was approved in 3 days.

They don't allow 3 tab shingles anymore, which is great. If you want metal, or clay, or slate you will need approval.
