Since when did someone saying something that hurt your feelings become such a big deal?
Maybe I'm too old and out of touch with society but anytime I'm offended by a statement I just understand that the person has a different opinion than me

It seems apparent in today's society that if you are offended by someone you can shout out and get sympathy because you were offended. You can even have a societal movement for being offended.

Please help me understand "millenials" how being offended equates culture change

Boomers and gen x'ers are just as guilty of the outrage bug. I suggest some quiet introspection and self awareness for you.

Being offended is a sign of how good things truly are in America. What bathroom someone uses is national news now. Things have obviously never been better.

You should probably edit your title by adding a trigger warning. Otherwise, posters can be blindsided by microaggressions emanating from this thread. Even if they do not click on the thread, they may still be affected by seeing the title alone. For that reason, I suggest that you insert the trigger warning at the beginning of your thread title because people naturally read left to right. Therefore, they will see the trigger warning at the beginning, before they reach the end of the thread title, and can then make an informed decision as to whether or not they wish to proceed.

Two words; Virtue Signaling.

Here's Jonathan Haidt laying it out pretty well;

Millennials turned in their man card to live in mom and dad's basement.

Obvious liberal. Why are someone's personal feelings on bs subjects so important? Shouldn't we be more concerned with our children's and our country's future other than being offended by someone's statement that doesn't affect us? Pussification continues

I 100% agreed until

This behavior is not exclusive to people under the age of 25. I am a millennial, for instance, and I cannot contribute to helping you understand. Its more about people not grasping reality, regardless of age.

ETA: People who try to reference millennials in every single problem that arises in this country, are part of the frickin problems.

Social media plays a big part because it gives people a platform to say things, that is seen by more people, which increases the chance someone will be offended. But there is also a certain standard that has been set; society has set the bar as to what people are suppose to be offended by.

I think the bigger problem is lack of communication, more than anything. There was a study done years ago in which pro-life and pro-choice people were put in a certain environment and the result ended up being the two groups yelling and screaming at each other. They took another group, pro-life and pro-choice and put them in a more controlled environment where each person had a chance to explain why they were pro-life or pro-choice.. At the end of the discussion, the two groups of people were embracing each other and had a lot better understanding of each other.

If someone you never met, came up to you and said "you know what, something about the way you look annoys the shite out of me. I can't stand your stupid arse" would you be offended? I think when people get offended, they feel a certain way about whatever it is and it becomes personal to them.

Also, this idea that it all falls at the feet of millennials is ridiculous. My parents and grandparents worry about the most trivial shite too, but millennials are much better at leveraging technology to get their insignificant opinion to the masses.
