My allergist is very clear on this -

Vaccines and the preservatives used in them.

And to everyone saying it’s about kids getting their hands dirty or early exposure that is not relevant. There are 18 mos olds going into shock due to exposure to tree nuts or peanuts. 18 mos olds aren’t supposed to be rolling around in mud or eating cashews anyway.

Check out any day school, many in the class has severe allergies sometimes even to eggs, wheat and of course to tree nuts and peanuts.

Reverse of that. My wife grew up eating shellfish her whole life but aquired at shellfish allergy in her late 30's. Had to carry around an epi pen now. Strange but it happens.

My grandmother developed a shellfish allergy in her late 70s. Growing up in south Louisiana and living on a diet that included pretty much every kind of shellfish on a regular basis, not being able to eat it nearly killed her, she'd regularly joke that life wasn't worth living.

The news was not so wide spread 40 years ago, and it may not have credited to any type of food allergy.

Something changed. Kids weren't dropping dead from allergies in the 80s nor was there some huge infant mortality rate. 5% of kids somehow developed this. I didn't know a single kid in my life growing up that had a nut allergy.

Let’s say for a second your allergist isn’t completely full of shite, what vaccines are kids taking now at age 3 or under they didn’t in the 70s and 80s?

Combination of formula fed babies, lack of exposure to allergins, and hyper awareness of the allergy.

Why do people have more mental illnesses now compared to then?

They don’t - mental illness wasn’t talked about or used as a crutch, and if you were mentally ill you were either put away or in jail

Well, the poster who I was replying to said those kids died earlier in life on the previous page. I don't think that's the case.

But clearly we are doing something that's causing this to be more prevelant now. I have known kids who ended up in the emergency room over allergic reactions but none who died.

Several years ago I went to my doctor. In my chart it said I was allergic to penicillin. He asked me when was the last time I had taken it and I told him I couldn't remember, I was a kid.

He told me "a lot of times people have a reaction to things when they are young and then they think they are allergic to it forever, but sometimes it can be just that one reaction".. He wrote me a prescription for it and told me to let him know if I have any problems.. I took it with no problem..

I feel like that's what happens to a lot of these kids.. But of course I wouldn't take my advice.. That's just my opinion and I wouldn't ever try it on someone's kids, but kids today are soft.

Some think that it due to the pesticides and fertilizers we use now. The chemicals are more abundant.

When I was a kid my mom and dad used to get oyster loaves (poboys) at least once a month. I would eat mine like a good little girl and throw up after. A few times I got spanked for ‘making myself throw up’

At 18, I had a terrible asthma attack and an allergy test was done - I was allergic to oysters - my back flared up so bad, they couldn’t read the rest of the test, but that’s not what was causing my asthma.

Anyway, fast forward 20 years and I ate some French fries that had had oyster Rockefeller on top - got hives and threw up and my husband fussed at me
