Likewise. Feel like that damn dog understood 90% of my vocabulary. It’s like losing a family member

They are incredible, and yeah...just talk normal to them and they learn your habits and the bonding is amazing.

Many use German for commands because GSDs can learn language so well, they don't want to confuse commands with general conversation.

It is never easy to let them go. We had three of our elderly adopted dogs die in the past year.

Prayers for you during this tough time.
May your dear companion rest in eternal peace.

You made the right decision.

I went through the same thing 18 months ago. She was there with me through a whole lot for 11 years of my life. At least I got to hold her when she passed.

I can't remember if I saw this quote on TD or somewhere else, but it really helped me feel better about losing my best friend, my dog.

“There is a cycle of love and death that shapes the lives of those who choose to travel in the company of animals. It is a cycle unlike any other. To those who have never lived through its turnings and walked its rocky path, our willingness to give our hearts with full knowledge that they will be broken seems incomprehensible. Only we know how small a price we pay for what we receive; our grief, no matter how powerful it may be, is an insufficient measure of the joy we have been given.” - Suzanne Clothier

You did yhe right thing. They don't need to suffer.

I've said it often, pets are like family only without the drama and BS. Better than family!

I am sorry for your loss.

Dogs are amazing, empathic creatures and are a true gift from God.

Same with my cat three weeks ago, it still hurts. It’s the part of pet ownership I hate. I get very attached to those suckers.

Hardest thing I’ve ever done. It’s been 18 months and I still can’t even think about it without tearing up.

Sent my sweet girl home after 13+ years with her this summer. My heart still has a hole. I know I'll have another one eventually, but she was the absolute sweetest and smartest dog I've ever known.

Also, my next dog will just be mine and my wife's (no pics). I have a 16 year old left in the house, but he'll be gone soon and the dog will barely know my kids that have left the nest. Kinda is a weird thing to think about.

Here's my girl, still wanting the ball at 11+ yrs old.

was actually a little harder than i thought it would be...

i've always been "it's just a dog" type of person, but ain't gonna lie, when the end came and we had to make that decision, then watching her die, it wasn't as easy as i thought it would be

Never is easy. I've stayed with the last 3 as they passed. Two old ones that told me it was time neither could walk anymore and one that died on the operating table way to young. They were always there for me so i held each one of them as the passed on.
