My golden retriever will quite literally eat shite, and yet he still brings more positive things to the world than 75% of the people I meet.

People care so much about dogs because they can anthropomorphize them and project their feelings of what a perfect human is on them. Look at this thread. Posters have said dogs don't complain, dogs don't lie and all they want is to love and be loved. Those are the qualities those posters want most in another person but attribute them to a dog who can't act in those ways because it's a dog.

Heck of a question.

These dog people on this board are certified beta weirdos.

Somebody posted one day theor dog died and they had the mutt cremated and had a little ceremony.
I laughed so hard my insides starting hurting.

Because humans, in general, suck.

I don't know about all that. I would agree for the most part, but some dogs are trained to do something, and that's all they care about. Collies and Shepards can be like that.
You can throw a ball with them for an hour, and they retrieve it everytime. You finally stop doing it and want to pet and hug the dog and it looks at you like "get the frick off me and throw the damn ball again"

There's some that view the world as I have a job, to do what my master tells me, and i don't care about anything else and i don't need thank you's.
My buddy has a Border Collie like that. Awesome dog, but cold hearted.

I know that is not the case for me, however with that being said I do get pretty pissed off when these dog deaths keep occurring. The reason is that it seems to be that the police officers action is to back away, tell the dog to move away then fire. I don't feel like a dog knows any better. I can assure you that my lab would chase you if you were running backwards and telling him to go away so I guess he would get shot with his tail wagging.

Your underestimation of dogs is impressive. Where did you learn about their cognitive and emotional abilities? Church? Science is way past you, man. Not all dogs are created equal, but maybe dog owners see these abilities in their dogs because they're more intimately familiar with said abilities.

quote:

Why do people lavish so much care on a member of an alien species? A short answer is that on an emotional plane, families do not see the dog as alien. According to John Archer (1) of the University of Central Lancashire, who has conducted a detailed study of dog-human relations from an evolutionary perspective, about 40% of owners identify their dog as a family member reflecting social compatibility between our two species.

quote:

Dogs are extraordinarily attentive and have an uncanny ability to predict what their owners will do, whether getting the dog a meal or preparing to go on a walk. Experiments show that dogs and wolves can be astute readers of human body language using the direction of our gaze to locate hidden food (2) a problem that is beyond chimps.

Dogs also seem attuned to the emotional state of their masters and express contrition when the owner is annoyed, for example. Otherwise, the capacity to express affection -unconditionally - makes the dog a valued "family member."

quote:

According to Groves: "The human-dog relationship amounts to a very long lasting symbiosis. Dogs acted as human's alarm systems, trackers, and hunting aides, garbage disposal facilities, hot water bottles, and children's guardians and playmates. Humans provided dogs with food and security. The relationship was stable over 100,000 years or so, and intensified in the Holocene into mutual domestication. Humans domesticated dogs and dogs domesticated humans."

Man and dog evolved socially together. It's natural.

I think people care about it so much because 1)dogs are definitely more well behaved than humans and 2)people are getting REALLY sick of all of dumb shite cops do and most importantly get away with. Try googling "Cop killed by dog" and you will get zero instances. However, it's pretty much daily where a cop kills a dog because he "fears for his life". settlement for Cop shooting dog in car with window cracked

I've met just as many shitty dogs as shitty humans. Just wondering where I need to draw the line

Because humans have far more freedom to choose their paths, which makes it more heinous when they choose a path of destruction that burdens others. Dogs are completely dependent on humans to feed them, and help them survive, because if humans didnt tend to their base needs, they wouldnt survive and would likely go extinct. (How many wild dogs do you find surviving in the continental US?) Humans can be far far more "self-sufficient" than dogs can. Dogs are also far more easily conditioned to act in a particular way...usually a result of HUMAN choice, again, if the dog is a shitty dog, that is likely a result of being taught shitty by a shitty human. How is this concept hard to understand? Free will my friend, free will indeed. Also, dogs dont live as long to begin with, so their time on earth is like a blink of an eye.

Also, the most evil dog in the world still can't decide to pick up a gun and shoot people, and can't convince an entire network of humans that by killing, their purpose in life is somehow fulfilled.
