Breast feeding takes a lot of work and some planning. Ignorant folks ain't got no time for all of that kind of shite.

Every pediatrician I've ever met says something along the lines of "breast is best, but formula is just fine" -- barring actual sensitivities/issues with cow's milk and whatnot. If breastfeeding works for mom and baby, it's obviously the best choice. If breastfeeding is a daily struggle that further affects the parents' sleep, relationship, and/or emotional, physical, and mental health, it's probably doing a larger disservice to the baby by not switching to formula. You also don't have to choose one or the other, either.

Yeah, we supplemented with formula. The first time we have the baby a breast milk / formula mix before bed, she slept through the night for the first time and ever since. Breast milk is free and formula isn't cheap. It was an easy choice for us, but it did require a lot from the wife. It all really depends on if the woman wants to put in a time. There are many benefits moms get out of it, such as losing pregnancy weight easier and creating a special bond with the baby.

Wait... what does breastfeeding and socioeconomics have to do with each other?

The short-term advantages of breastfeeding, mainly the positive effect on gut flora and rotavirus resistance, are the overwhelming causes of good outcomes from breastfeeding in data worldwide. Gastrointestinal issues causing diarrhea or failure to thrive are very big causes of infant mortality which makes breastfeeding alot safer than feeding infants contaminated water in developing countries.

Of course, these aren't as much of a concern for first world countries and especially not for people above the poverty line, hence why the advantage becomes marginal for middle class and up.

Breastfeeding is for women who know what's best for their baby. My wife works full time and breastfeeds / pumps everyday. Its a huge pain in the arse for her but she knows its the best thing for our son. She only has a few more months of it.

They probably get food stamps for formula.

Isn't breasts feeding supposed to make kids more smart?

Eta: My buddy has half a freezer full of titty milk (from his wife). I guess she just pumps it out when she has time and stores it

I'm convinced George Bush has something to do with this. Just another way for white people to hold blacks down

breastfeed babies suffer less bouts of being sick as well. The thing about it, breastfeeding is hard and takes a lot of time and effort. Most people here are lazy, poorly educated and shouldn't be having babies in the first place.

It's easier to get free formula from WIC than it is to take the time to pump.

This is very true.

Also, a lot of it is cultural. A lot of blacks have no history of anyone in their family breastfeeding. Women talk about it being painful and a lot of baby daddies are opposed to it.

ETA: Source for this info was an OBGYN at woman's hospital who has been doing this for 40 years.

I was gonna mention that in AZ I don't really see as many black women breastfeeding either. Only ones you see most of the time doing it....are black women that are refugees from Africa.

Also, seems like if the mom is really young.....she tends to end up bottle feeding.

You have two children and will say that formula = better sleeping and breast milk = fussy. You are obviously a scientist. Great sample size.

Read ingredients of premade formula. Terrible. I wouldn't feed my child junk food like that. First ingredient is corn oil for most. Second ingredient is sugar.

Breastfeeding takes dedication & time. Most people are lazy as frick so it's seemingly easier to just formula feed. Not to mention, you can drink with no limits & eat whatever you want. The first week or so of breastfeeding is the hardest. Not gonna lie, shite hurts but once you & baby get the hang of it, it's a breeze.

I believe breast is best and wouldn't give my baby formula unless I had to. There's certain antibodies in breastmilk that can't be found in formula. Also, formula fed babies tend to sleep through the night because formula is harder to break down & digest than breastmilk thus leaving them fuller longer. But really, it's nothing to wake up once or twice a night & let baby suck on a tit for 15 minutes.

Because they don't care about their children as much as they care about drinking.

1 of my three kids were breastfeed. Oldest son tore up my ex's boobs. My ex didn't know how to latch him on correctly so we took him off the boob. Next my daughter came along and while in the hospital the nurse showed my ex how to properly attach her to the boobs. So my daughter was breastfeed. My youngest son didn't do well with breastfeeding so we just bottle feed him. All in all I really couldn't tell the difference other than I helped feed my kids allot more when they were on the bottle. One last thing my hair and skin never looked so good when my daughter was breastfeeding

That, and the baby isn't always ready when you are. Breast pumps and storage bags/bottles aren't cheap and people without much money are going to be less inclined to spend that much on something they'll only use for a few months.

Because low income people do not breastfeed. Black people especially.
