Went get a oil change at a 5 minute oil change place, last oil change they removed the old air filter and forgot to put a new one in. They charged me for it the last oil change. So the car hasn't had a air filter for 5 or 6 thousand miles.

not good...not catastrophic

but not good

I would make them change the oil for free every 500 mile until you get crystal clear oil on the changes

but the wear from the dirt is already done

not gonna really be a big issue unless you do a hell of a lot of driving on dirt roads or something like that. at least it happened during a relatively wet period so there is not a ton of dust in the air.

Not good but if the car is running good now and not blowing blue smoke all is not lost. Some small dirt particles (silica) will be captured by the oil filter as they circulate.

Whatever microscopic wear on the cylinder walls is already done so there is no fixing it.

Do multiple oil and filter changes a few hundred miles apart to try and get the contamination out of the system.

That's really all you can do at this point.

Will you be able to find evidence the engine is ruined and get the place to get you a new engine? I seriously doubt it.

You can run an oil analysis from a company like Blackstone and quantify the damage, unless you changed the oil already. Great way to put a vendor in a corner when they make a idiotic mistake like that- there is not really an excuse to forget to put a air filter in, but remember to clamp the filter housing back down. Most vehicles have a tight seal and it takes some doing to get everything lined up when the filter is present.

Even better is the MAF sensor probably has a nice layer of dust on the element and inner workings now- the very sensitive element and inner workings.

He would probably have to be able to prove they didn't put a filter in and that he didn't just remove it himself, which would be damn near impossible.

Everybody makes mistakes. Making fun of someone for going to a 5 Minute Oil Change or a Jiffy Lube is plain stupid.

My wife takes her car to the dealership for everything. Just last week she had her oil changed and a few days later I noticed a pool of oil in the garage.

Dumbasses didn't tighten the drain nut all the way.

Thanks everyone for responding. The car is 2016 Honda Accord. Went to 5 hour oil change out of convenience. Never had a problem before, just a careless mistake by the mechanic. The car runs fine. I'm making a call with the company Monday. Hopefully I can them to change the oil a few times to filter any trash out.

I was livid but luckily it didn't leak much because the dealership said it was still "full".

Yeah, I think I'd have been pretty pissed too.
