In Ascension parish and will be buying a jeep within the month of April. Any recommendations for where to look- in BR or elsewhere? I travel for work so could always buy it ou of state and bring it back. This will be my first jeep and want to stay under $25k.

Had a 1996 caravan similar thing happened. I was able to get it to a transmission shop and they told me to junk it because it needed a rebuild. I had already dropped the pan and didn't find any metal shavings. I instead but a computer module for the transmission and swapped it. Worked fine after that.
I would drop the pan to see if there are any metal shavings.

Hope that works out for you, I bought in '02 and it was 25K for an X with some tweaks.

I mean it was lunch break. I checked the fluid and it was not low.

Unfamiliar with the tcase setup on a jeep.
I suppose there is a chance the high range took a dump due to no fluid and then the low range did as well.
Refresh my memory on the setup and I might be able to help.
A cherokee auto used is 270$ at lkq in port allen. Cant be THAT hard to change.
Why they were smart enough to outsource the trans for the 4 cylinders but not the six is beyond me.
Aisin auto transmissions are nigh infreakingdistructable. Sad part is the aisin they run behind the 4 cylinder would have held up to the six just fine. The early tundras/t100s run a variation.

You really might be ok just getting a reputable shop to rebuild it. Pretty sure you have a 32RH if you have a 4.0 I6 which are pretty much a dime a dozen. Did you pull the dipstick to check the fluid condition? Was the fluid dark or had a "burned" look to it? Was this a slow deterioration or a sudden thing? You can check for transmission fault codes with a code scanner or by cycling the ignition and counting the flashes on the instrument cluster. Contrary to what some here might tell you the 32RH is itself a tough transmission, you are more likely to have problems with the solenoids and sticking valves in the valvebody which are actually a fairly straight forward repair even for a DIY'er.

Aisin is the company who builds transmissions. Toyota, suzuki, jeep. The new HD dodge now runs an Aisin trans if I remember right.
They build good parts.
One reason I imagine people swap to the aw4 found in cherokees.

If I pull the trigger on one, I'm getting a manual.
Like someone else mentioned....you will likely have to order it.
When my husband bought his Rubicon in Nov 2012 he got lucky and found the ONLY manual in the area that had JUST arrived at the dealership. We went straight there and while we were doing all the paperwork they got at least 3 different phone calls from people asking if it was still there for sale.

Anyone got any ideas and more importantly, what kind of damage am I looking at financially? I'm getting it towed tomorrow.
Ill buy it if you want to part with it. On another note, used transmissions should run around $600. If you need some more info on that, post your email and i'll get with you.

Didn't notice the slipping until this morning. The fluid was darker than the usual red, yes.

Probably varnished the valves or a failed solenoid. When was the last time you had the fluid changed out?

You didn't get any codes from your computer?

Yep... the Aisin AW4 is about as bulletproof a tranny you'll find.
The Aisin 6 speed is an option on the 2500/3500...otherwise you're getting the Chrysler 6 speed.

Bought a 98 in 04.
Had to replace the trans in 05
Been a hoss ever since. Love it, would never get rid of it, it's a jeep not a luxury unit....stop 2 Gs on a rebuilt trans and let it ride.
Of course that is not my every day driver....

They are adequate at stock levels but far from bulletproof. Aisin has laid a few eggs too, the 5-speed auto shared between Jeep and Nissan Titan comes to mind.

Mother of god.
Yeah...they did screw that one up... but I stand by the statement that a stock aisin trans is usually more than adequate for whatever application it is in.

smell the fluid if smells burnt you need a trans. i think you need one anyway. never go with a rebuilt just get a good used trans. call blacks salvage in brusly they should have one or can get one for a great price.
buy it then call a few shops and see how much to get it installed. dont go to the dealer. also the closer to the hood the cheaper the labor. call the asians they will do it for a great price.

This was my first thought since the motor keeps quitting. It sounds electrical/computer to me.
