isnt the white the neutral?

is it being used for power here?

why are there 2 blacks connected to that screw?

this is not a 3-way switch.

i'm swapping this for a dimmer that needs a neutral to keep the switch energized and a common and hot as well but not sure how to reconnect.

Maybe the other black feeds something else on the circuit?

Are you saying it takes 2 blacks to equal the output of 1 white?

What does this switch control?

Black should be hot
White should be neutral

Can you test the white for voltage?

It looks like the single white was pigtailed out as a hot, then the two blacks are switchlegs, and the neutrals for those are tied up in the back of the switchbox.

Take a pic of all the shite in the 2 gang box and post it.

Only one way to find out.

1. Set up video camera directed at switch.
2. Turn circuit breaker on.
3. Flip switch to up/on position.
4. Touch either of black wires with tongue.

will do.

actually a 3 gang box

1 - outside front door light
2 - inside hall light
3 - outdoor floods

(in that order in the box)

Are any of the other two switches 3 way?

My guess, whomever tied the box rolled / tied all the white neutrals at once, rolled all the hots (black) with white pigtails to separate his hots from his (also black) switchlegs.

Which is weird as frick, but I need to see more.

outdoor switch is 2 pole, the middle 'hall' switch is 3 way and this switch is 2 way.

i've replaced several switches in my house but this configuration threw me. i'll pull the other switches out and take a pic of the whole shebang later.

As you probably already know, normally you'd never have a white wire on a 2 pole switch, and since you say it controls 2 lights, I'd assume the black was switchlegs. Hard to say, but for the house to meet code that white has to be the hot. If you live in the county and there's some crazy stuff going on then it'll be hard to figure out.

thats why i posted the pic here

i am really not sure what's going on other than it seems to work at the moment.

yes, it controls 2 outdoor fixtures that each have 2 floods. should have been a very simple swap for a new switch.
