A fcked up neutral can burn your house down... particularly if you have any high current draw appliances on the leg.

The other black feeds something else.

I'll wait for the picture of the whole box before going on about possible connections. But I will ask, are the flood lights motion sensor or do you have CFL's in them? A dimmer could ruin your fixtures or lamps, or the dimmer itself, if you don't have the proper styles.

i'll post a pic of the entire wire situation when i get home.
hopefully that will make it clear what's going on.

Both wires are hot. When wiring switches you're supposed to put black tape on the white wire if it's hot. Some DIYer didn't do that.

You can probably find a "how to" book on Amazon.....

i'm not surprised thats true. there is some questionable electrical work i've noticed since we bought the house.

I ran into the same thing 11 years ago. Exact same issue, but multiple switches. I said screw it and unassed the money for a professional to make it right. I figured I'd end up killing myself or burning the place down. I can't remember what he did for the life of me.

This the the practical thing to do when you absolutely must use a white wire to serve as a power source.
Someone screwed up - no excuse if it was original to the house - they should have used red for the other power in a 3-way switch.

red wire.... always the red wire

wait I mean green. Always the green wire.

just by how you are asking the questions....I don't think you should handle this.
Yes a white wire is supposed to be neutral. BUT a switch ONLY interrupts the power supply to the switched item. So a switch gets power and sends power out, or cuts power. There is no neutral on the switch. Now rather than run a second wire and only use the black wire on each, most electricians will send the switched power back to the witched item through the white wire.
The second black wire is a daisy chain.

okay, I rephrase that.
Every single time I have come across a wall switch it had a hot white wire. Though to be fair, my experience is limited to my 1965 house and my 1925 rental and my friend's 1948 rental.

The Generational difference is big. I didn't want to argue, because some places have crazy code rules as well.

i feel like a complete dunce that a simple electrical switch has me stumped but this thread is making me feel a little better.
napoleon..no..i am definitely no electrical guru but i have swapped out about 30 light fixtures in the house and too many wall switches to count.
this one was..interesting..and so i thought i'd ask my esteemed colleagues of the OT what they thought.
