I've heard various opinions on alcohol calories not having an impact on weight gain to alcohol calories being worse than food calories when gaining fat. What is your opinion?

I quit drinking completely a week ago and plan to for a while. I eat fairly healthy and exercise quite a bit but have had a fair amount of fat gain as I've gotten older. I would typically drink 4-5 nights a week anywhere from 6 beers to the occasional 12-15 beers in a night.

Would cutting that out of my life alone see significant results as far as weight loss? After a week all I'm seeing is increased energy levels but that's about it.

Along with cutting out the alcohol, try an intermittent fast diet for about 2 weeks to jump start the weight loss.

I'm not a dietitian, but it seems to me like alcohol would be very similar to the calories from refined sugars.

Well, they don't call it a beer gut for nothing.

The average calories for a non-light beer is around 150. If you're drinking a case, on some nights that's damn near a day's worth of calories.

Not opinion. Fact. It has a significant impact.

They call it a beer gut for a reason. ETA: Posted at the same time! ^^

Also - You are probably of below average intelligence. With hard work you can overcome it and have a happy, successful life, but if you aren't aware, you'll never know you have a problem.

calories in v calories out versus quality of calories consumed is always worth 20 pages on this board.

This! I started, unknowingly, with a 17 hour fast diet going from 7pm - 11am for a month or so and lost 20 pounds. I have now increased it to a 23-24 hour fast and lost 3lbs last week and only did it for 4 days. Mind you, my calorie intake is no more than 1200-1800 per day and I do walk 4-8 miles per day.

Calories are calories. burn more than you put in and you will lose weight, it doesn't matter what kind of calories they are. put in more than you burn and you will gain weight, doesn't matter what kind of calories they are.

Sure, the KIND of weight you lose or gain may be different based on what it is, but calories are calories.

I do the 16 hour fast (9PM-1PM). So I basically don't eat breakfast. I go to the gym on my lunch break and eat lunch after I work out along with a lean body protein shake and then eat a healthy dinner. It has been very successful.

This is not correct. Protein calories are less fattening than calories from carbs and fat, because protein takes more energy to metabolize.

1 beer has an average of 125 calories lets say.

Say you drink 6 a night that's 750 calories.

Let's say your diet remains exactly the same.

You cut that out 5 days a week and that's 3750/3500=1.07lbs lost a week. So yea you'll see significant weight loss as long as you're eating below your maintenance level.

Bourbon and vodka calories are better than lager and ale calories.

The sugars in liquor aren't absorbed the same way as sugars/carbs in beer by the body.

Drink vodka or bourbon neat or rocks and watch the pounds melt away.

That's a lot of drinking, and I was doing almost that much at the end of last year.

I "quit" in January this year. I lost 10 pounds in about a month and a half of only drinking 3 times (special occasions.) I have phased drinking back in and picked up a couple pounds again. I'm comfortable at my current weight (5'10 174). Cutting back on drinking had to be what did it, because I already had a decent diet and exercised.
