Do y'all think they overhype these kinds of storms to get the ratings? That isn't to say that you shouldn't treat a hurricane with anything less than the utmost caution, it just seems to me that they always predict the usual "100 year storm" etc. and it's never really as bad as they say.

I'm not from the coastal regions or S. LA where they get a lot of these, so I haven't really ever been through anything like this. I know we have a lot of people on here that really study this kind of thing and post updates on the hurricane threads that we'll l have, so do y'all just not even watch the tv in this instance and just follow those tracks?

it's better to be safe than sorry. If a meteorologists were to say "this shouldn't be too bad of a storm" and anyone gets hurt or dies because of that storm, it would look really bad on them. So I think if there's any chance a storm could be severe, they will promote preparing for the worst

According to Bob Breck I died in Katrina because I didn't evacuate.

I love them. The actual scientists I mean...

But you should know that very few reporters are meteorologists...they are just reporters with a bachelors in science...the only one in the news office...so they do sciencey weather.

According to Bob Breck I died in Lili. He also lost his damn mind for that storm when people kept calling in complaining that the MLB playoff game was in a small box on the right of the screen.

I don't think the meterologists themselves - especially the ones with an actual degree in a weather or science field - overhype storms. They tend to tell the worst case scenerio, sure, but I think people need to hear how bad it could be.

Who overhypes it are the everyday reporters and anchors, who stand out there in a 5 mph breeze and light rain and scream into the mic like the world is coming to an end.

Don't blame the mets for that crap.

Please specify tv meteorologists. People who actually study this shite and know what's going on get pissed off at the tv fricks for overhyping things. That being said this storm has been handled relatively well.

Weather is a business. Nobody tunes in all day to hear them talk about beautiful weather, so when an opportunity presents itself, such as a tropical system, they go all-in. I also wouldn't doubt that the political views of the networks also influence how they cover the storms.

I suspect that falls more on the network or news station they work for.

They do have a responsibility to convey how serious a storm can be. People still don't heed warnings to evacuate, so perhaps it is pertinent to overhype things as it is better to be safe than sorry. However, I think a lot of people that have seen these tactics before tend to think the meteorologists are crying wolf, and no longer take some events as seriously as they should.

They are like any other news agency, they would rather boost ratings/ make news than actually report what's going on. I understand that precautions have to be taken but ratings seem to be more important than facts. While they probably don't lie about actual data they skew predictions to make it seem like the apocalypse is nearing.

James Spann is the only meteorologist I trust. He gives his opinion based on what he knows and doesn't try to rile people up for ratings
