It's not for anyone to be offended by- you've said nothing to disregard others' views or mock what they say. I do hope that I am coming across as sincere and in that same context as well.

Appreciated. As a general rule I don't talk religion because I'll either offend someone who I might need to pretend in front of later for business reasons, or I'll just get sick of being preached at.

I don't mind conversations about the deeper nature of the universe and gods purpose(s) or lack thereof. I just don't like those who take offense at pointed questions and me playing the devil's advocate.

Personally I think most who claim to "speak with authority" and go get buggered for all they're worth

God's answer to Job's "why?" is basically "Because I'm bigger than you". It's "where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth?" Not much comfort there.

It may not offer comfort, but it shows that he knows what he's doing and sometimes we just have to have faith. Who said having faith would always be easy?

Fr33manator, I'm not pitching a repackaged God. You are deeply troubled that a supposedly just God permits evil. I suspect that part of that is that he allowed it in a way that affected you deeply. Seems like a sucker punch. I get that.

All I'm saying is stay open. Express your anger to God. In my view, it's better to cuss God out than to ignore him. It's way ok to be mad at God in my book. Just stay open to answers.

I wasn't trying to pitch you a repackaged God either. That is the God that I know. And I completely agree that it's better you cuss him out and question him rather than shutting him out. Shutting him out is the worst you could do.

You and I believe a lot alike. But let's look at this from fr33manator's perspective.

He didn't choose this world. The person he lost didn't deserve to die. So the "it's a sinful world; sucks for you" approach doesn't seem real loving to me.

I'm not Adam. Maybe I wouldn't have eaten that fruit. So why is this crap visited on my head?

Remember, I'm a believer. But I don't believe any answer is that simple when it comes to God.

Uh, actually, in the Book of Job, Satan took it all away from him.

But God allowed it in order to prove Satan wrong, right? Serious question, as I've not read the bible, so all of my info comes from random snippets in various media.

Nobody. But from where f33manator sits, and I've been, faith looks like codependency to an abusive parent.

Well, I've read nothing ever to suggest the devil may exist without God having created him in the beginning and the Satan having denounced Him with his angelic free will (which is an eternal "yes" or "no" that exists outside of earthly time as opposed to the human free will which is, of course, lived in a world with time).

And yes, I understand that you used "devils advocate" as a colloquial phrase. Just seemed like a fun place to toss that in, though.

I don't mind a morally ambiguous deity. It would make more sense than the "all good" or "all bad" we've been fed.

I've felt the heavens tremble, seen the wonders of the cosmos, gone through the wormhole and come out inside out on the other side. Whoever designed this place is a beautiful madman.

And a bastard. But I'm cool with that. And if he were to decide to make himself known to me (hopefully without killing what's left of my family or making boils break out all over me or whatever other depraved stuff he likes to do) then I'm more than open.

After all, the fecker gave us beer, right?

That's why I hate talking about this over a message board. It's hard for me to sound loving while still saying what I believe over a keyboard. But when someone asks, "how could a loving God allow this to happen?" what other answer is there?

Isn't being non denomination being a denomination? I never understood this. Plus the ones I have come across are eager to let you know it.

I'll respond then with "more or less" and add this link because the story is approximately a three-minute read. It's the King James Version, and it's an Old Testament story. There are a number of websites where, if you google "Job 1:1-22" you'll be able to see multiple translations of the story which all read roughly the same (though I encourage you to peak around a few translations just to understand that getting caught up on any given word-choice is usually just semantics and not relevant to the story. This differs with the Gospels more so than Old Testament stuff, so the general meaning in the above story should be fine. Please forgive me if this is something you were already aware of. The line "I have not read the bible" just made me think I should toss that in to know that many translations exist to tell the story).

I think God would like us to divine his mysteries over a pint of one of his finest creations. If you ever find yourself in BR, hit me up. I realize message boards don't convey tone that well.

I really get that. And I know you are sincere and good hearted.

There are many answers. Maybe God's a jerk. Maybe he doesn't care. Maybe he's a lunatic, or senile. I don't think any of those things in my heart. But I've wondered at times. And God wasn't the least bit afraid of me wondering. And I found that wondering those things and really grappling with them brought me closer.

Never considered that one...hmmm.

That's why magic and miracles are fading out of the world...he's forgotten about us.

Or maybe he has a sexy new galaxy now and doesn't need us anymore.

Whatever he is, he better be able to take a joke if he wants to hang with me.

Neither do they convey inflection or emphasis, which leads me to boldly ask a question that has probably been all our minds.

Is it fr33-man-uh-tor(nado) or fr33-muh-nay-tor (like terminator)?

Rob Bell.

There's a lot of real debate here among sincere people. Personally, I go with Rusty Cohle on this one. "If the the only thing keeping a person decent is the expectation of divine reward then, brother, that person is a piece of shite."

I try to live a good life because I feel God's love in my heart, and I'm grateful. I'd live the same way if Jesus returned to personally tell me there is no heaven or hell. It ain't the point for me.
