Oh boy, my car of 80k miles has its first issue - transmission. Recently, the check engine light came on and two days later my car on I-55 does not go above 76 when going up a hill. It starts to spin out of control in the RPM jumping to 5,000. After the road flattens out, again, it does not get back to 76. I floor it for a second and nothing..RPM stays flat and speed does not break 70. I pull over and wonder what is going on and pull out the owner's manual. I restart the engine and the problem starts, again. I get to about 30 mph and then boom, it gets jerky on me, but then smooths out and runs fine after about five seconds.

I happened to be due to an oil change that day so I go in for that and ask about the transmission. They hook the computer and the Check Engine Light is for transmission, but they cannot perform that there. There was a small transmission leak.

This was three days ago. I was not in position to go to a mechanic, though, at the time: I will tomorrow. When driving today, the problem happened, again, on I-78 while going up and down hills.

Anyone have an idea of the problem and projected price tag? Car is a 2012 Nissan Versa Sedan.

I can't diagnose based on that, but I damn sure wouldn't be taking any long trips in that vehicle.

ETA: that sounds like some type of electronic or sensor problem to me.

Sounds like the transmission needs to be fixed.

Sweet ride.

I would prepare for the worst (a replacement/rebuild), the symptoms you described sound bad.

Good luck.

If there is a leak, check the transmission fluid level and see if it needs some.

Transmissions will act really funny if they are low on fluid and it could cost you a bunch of money to get fixed.

Don't wait, do it like today.

Sell car and buy one that doesn't have a CVT.

Good catch, I think he/she meant US Hwy 78 which (I think) is the new I-22?

If your transmission has a small leak, check for correct level. A lot of transmissions run off correct presssure. When was the transmission last serviced? As in fluid flushed, filter change if applicable.

EDIT

Get the leak fixed or be ready to drop $3,000 or more on parts/labor.

Yeah, figured that and was just pickin'. Then again I understand the folks down at my old Moo-U in Starkville really do refer to the controlled-access section of US-82 as "The Interstate".

Hmmm...

On the other hand, I drove on the newly-completed end-section of I-22 here in Birmingham yesterday. Beautiful road, with the average speed well above 80 MPH. I might or might not have been keeping up and having fun.

OP should still check and make sure it isn't a clogged catalytic converter.

Odds are still on the trans, though.

If you have to replace your tranny, do it yourself and save a few thousand dollars.

Here is your problem.

Nissans are shitmobiles. I will never own one again.

We had a Pathfinder that had tranny problems which was endemic to that model. I dont know if it affected other Nissan or not. What would happen is coolant would leak from the radiator into the tranny and destroy it. I flushed my tranny thoroughly, topped it off with fresh fluid and then traded that bitch in. Good luck.

This is definitely a transmission problem. Prepare to bend over when you go to the shop.

I feel sick now. I have done everything by the book on this car. Every single maintenance every so many thousand miles has been performed. This is fricking ridiculous that cars fall apart like this. I remember both my dad and granddad had cars over 500k miles on them. How is that possible with the upgrades in technology today that we are getting worse at it?
