Not at my son's high school. Some teachers weight and others don't. Many quizzes are equal to a test which is equal to homework. I'm not a teacher but to me a quiz or homework shouldn't be equal (and ISN'T equal) to a test.
So then they're weighted. Grades CANNOT "not" be weighted unless they don't count. HOW you assign "weight" to them, that is another issue. OR hell, maybe I'm missing something.

I can tell you the reason teachers do this though. They get mad when kids skip out on doing their bullshite assignments and still ace the tests. A lot of kids can pass 6th grade tests almost as soon as they go through the concepts once without doing the homework n bs classroom assignments. Teachers want the kids doing those things regardless if they have already mastered the material or not.
I was once sent to the principals office for reading a book in class after being told to pay attention. I was acing the class with flying colors but the teacher was insistent that i still needed to pay attention to the lectures
A) "a lot" of students do not master the material the first time simply by "going through the concepts." Every student is not you.
B) teachers have their reasons for this. They're not mad at you for knowing the material. Kids have a very strong sense of justice. The dumbest MF in the room sees you not paying attention and they will begin dicking off too. It doesn't matter that you know the material and they don't. You can't tell Joey to pay attention and ignore Steve who is also not paying attention for whatever reason.

This seems pretty standard, from what I can rmember of school.

I never understood why teachers gave a shite about homework if a kid is passing all of the tests, at that point all they are doing is punishing the kid for knowing the material. It's so dumb.

Well, duh!

No, assigning different point values for different assignments in not weighting. Weighting is giving different categories of assignments different percentages of the final grade. Total points=/= weighting

My son is smart as Frick. He will ace every test but he refuses to do homework. Would be nice if that didn't hurt him so much but it does. You have to do all the work the teacher assigns
But not all kids are that lucky. You know there are those kids that really give a shite and have to work hard and study to make decent grades. This system benefits them. And why not? They are putting in the work. It's junior high. Not college

Grades now are given, if you put forth any effort all teachers will give you an A. From layup tests, to bringing shite to class for extra points. My daughter is graduating this year as a straight a student her entire career. She has not been challenged one time in honors, gifted, or whatever programs she has been in. It's a joke, teachers give As so parents don't bitch.

She put forth effort for sure. She completed all of her assignments and studied
My son is a genius. He's not challenged so far as the material being difficult. But he doesn't like doing homework

Ok, she's a genius. A genius with straight As and a 30 on her ACT but who got a 48 on her last calculus test of the six weeks yet got an A.
Most kids are extraordinarily average. All 3 of mine fall in that category.

Yes, the idea that a quiz could be = to a test is silly. And even more silly where, as here, the quiz could be more important to the final grade than the test.

Drive will get you further than any other single thing in life.
Kids in HS and college are getting their work ethic tested just as much as their actual book smarts. I don't see a problem with it.
I'd rather hire a C+ student that has given his best effort and hasn't dicked around a job before an A+ student that gets bored AKA lazy.

Who cares? It's not like you have to make the grades.
