Opinions on son's school's grade policy

First, notice that the avg of minor grades is 50% and avg of major grades is 50%.
In Language Arts, there are fewer minor grades than major grades, so minor grades carry more weight. For instance, that 50 on a "who/whom" assignment carries almost 2x more weight than quizzes, tests, etc.
In Science, notice that 5/8 of the minor grades are test study guides, and the major grades are made of tests and a quiz. On those study guides, all they have to do is glue a sheet of questions in their notebook and answer the questions. One question was "What is a rock?" None of the questions are challenging. On those study guides, there have been between 3 and 10 questions. Most have around 7 questions. As you can see, a simple test review carries as much weight as the actual test.
Are these grading policies absurd? I'm glad my son has all A's, but it seems pretty hollow. I'm interested to see what the rest of you think. TIA.

Yes. That is ridiculous. It is insane how stupid some teachers can be. That's why the best way to lay it out for a teacher is to make each test a center percentage, and then the other categories.
Test 1: 10%
Test 2: 10%
Mid-term: 20%
Test 3: 10%
Test 4: 10%
Final: 25%
Minor grades/quizzes: 15%
Test 1: 10%
Test 2: 10%
Mid-term: 20%
Test 3: 10%
Test 4: 10%
Final: 25%
Minor grades/quizzes: 15%

Is this a standard report card these days? I'd be surprised if 10% of the parents understood what it meant.

The progress report is displaying that because the lazy teacher barely ever gives out an "minor assignments," they are worth considerably more each than major assignments.

this seems like the crux of the problem. Tell the teacher to stop fricking around and assign either less minor homework or increase the amount of major homework.

Yeah, that way is dumb.
Homework and easy shite should be 10 points total and tests should be 100 points total.
You get 9/10 on a homework vs a 90/100 on a test and the correct weight is applied.

I dunno, black frontier spelling was a beast of a chapter for me. Once I got past it though, everything else was smooth sailing, especially into the ice.

I can understand the reasoning to a point. Some teachers weigh class work and homework like tests to help kids who perform poorly on tests. However, based on your kid's "minor grades" he is either rushing through class work and not checking for errors or the teacher is treating every minor assignment like a test. Meaning, when the student turns it in, it is graded and not retaught as it should be.

This just highlights why standardized admissions tests are necessary because GPA can measure something very different from district to district.
