The wife has been doing her usual Groupon window shopping, and keeps bringing up air duct cleaning (on special for @ $50)
What's the point of having them cleaned?
Is this just another BS service that old people fall for?
Who's had it done, and did you have positive results?

I had it done when I first moved into my place because the dust was out of control. Totally worth it. They even cover your furniture so they don't get vent shite all over it. $50 seems way cheap though.

I'm getting mine done tomorrow. We've been in this house a year and no idea if or when it's been done before. The house is 40 years old.

We did it at our last house and it was great. The air smelled a bit fresher as they pull a ton of dust out...especially if you have pets. Allergies were also a little better. Worst case is that they had to disconnect all of the lines and put them back together...this ensured they were all solid. Before some had areas where the seals were loose. Happens over 30 years.

If I remember correctly it was $200 or $300 for our 2 story. We had it done while changing out one system and maintenance on another so we got a break. That company was very professional and had a special tool that went through the ducts with brushes to dislodge dirt and vacuum it up.

We're now in a 1 story and will get a quote tomorrow before they start. We're also getting the units cleaned and prepped for summer.

no it's need to be done. I've heard about 5 or so years. Probably could go longer, but in general, get it done.

I used to work for a company that did them.
Make sure that they run a mechanical whip through the entire supply system. A lot of these groupon companies will just vacuum around the registers and as far as the vacuum can reach.

It should normally cost $400 per system. Prepare to get a crappy job or a ton of up charges. LINK

The air filter is the duct cleaner. Change your filters per the life cycle of the filter you use and it will never be necessary.

The guy is going to show up, clean one duct, claim you have black mold and try to charge you $300. When you say "no", he's going to leave. Then you'll call Groupon to get your $50 back.

If your house has flex duct, you're really wasting your money.

Also, use a quality filter with a high MERV rating.

Make sure the filter is snug in the housing.

What he said. Go ahead and buy an Ionic Breeze while you are at it.

That's correct...And for added measure if someone desires, I was told by a reputable AC rep that while the unit is running you can take the filter off and spray a can of Lysol into the opening.

Any idea how much just doing new ductwork costs?

I've considered the prospect since I have an older home.

About 2000sqft

Why?

Just do a total-body cleanse and detox.
