In my few experiences with this (being in a wedding party that required travel) the dress/tux was paid for but not the hotel, airfare. However, they did book a block of rooms for family/wedding party that secured a good rate.

Nope. They are not obligated to pay for anything. You should have saved some money and or declined the invite

I flew from Germany to Baltimore for two nights for a friend's wedding this past October.

I had a great time and would gladly do it again.

Make a little stick figure of yourself out popsicle sticks and tape some cotton balls to it for the dress. Then send it to the bride and tell her to use it as your stand in. She can also keep it as a gift.

Is it common for the bride or groom to pay for the bridal party's airfare and/or hotel if they ask you to be in a wedding way far away?

It's probably "common" as it happens alot, but it isn't "customary" if thats what you mean.

When someone asks you to stand or be a best man/maid of honor you are agreeing to all that comes along with that including costs (showers, parties, travel, etc.).

The conversation needs to be had up front as to what you can afford and if you can't afford it without going into debt and she cant understand and you cannot come to an agreement, then yes....the option is that you declined.

For a best friend or your best friend. If it's really you're best friend you would be there. I went to Paraguay when my best friend got married. Wasn't cheap but it was worth it.

I've never had any bride or groom offer to pay for anything. Just hit that open bar like a boss.

I'm getting married next month and all of my groomsman and wife's bridesmaids are coming in from outta town….all groomsman we are having at our apartment and bridesmaid are in one hotel…the bridesmaids who are married are getting their own hotel on their dime otherwise we are putting them up.

but dress and flight and everything else is on your dime…frankly you sound cheap as hell…you have to spend 1,600 but the entire wedding is going to cost 30,000….imagine adding 1,600 x 6 on top of that…as Wise said, if she's your best friend, I'm shocked you would even bitch about it.
