I see the TV ads for these places like Capella, Southern New Hampshire University, University of Phoenix, WGU, and the rest and always assumed they were just diploma mills.

Are these degrees actually looked upon as "valid" or not really?

Just kind of talking about general areas of study like business or marketing.

I know SNHU is legit. I know a few people with degrees from there.

Personally I’d go to a local community college and finish there lol

I don't believe you can get a bachelor's or master's at a community college...

Not my opinion, but I've had a hiring manager tell me that he dumps applicants that have degrees from the University of Phoenix. I don't know why, maybe a bad experience with a graduate? Not sure about the others.

SNHU is a brick and mortar university that has been in existence since the 1930s or 30s

University of Phoenix was controversial because the course format was totally different from what was traditional, and they had not central campus.

Today many schools have adopted the Phoenix format fort their courses. Including ULL’s online MBA.

There are very few universities that don’t offer online degrees of some type, even Harvard and MIT, especially graduate programs.

I have seen a lot of people with online degrees get hired in positions for which a bachelor's was required. There are also a shitload of U of Phoenix nurses, both in the US, and Canada.

One does not necessarily follow the other. Do you know SNHU is legit for other reasons or only b/c you know some people that went there.

I know someone who went to University of Phoenix who would tell you it was a legit school too. I, however, know she is dumb as a fricking brick so I take her degree with a grain of salt.

If I was in HR and looking at a resume from one of these online universities, I would be very skeptical.

because its common sense and smart

if they are too frickin lazy to get out of bed, get dressed and drive/walk to school, then they are for damn sure too fricking lazy to show up for work and do anything

yes there are a few legit cases people dont have time to go to school in person, but so what, you are the one choosing the path that causes you to be lumped in with the lazy arse iwants if you do that so you must accept it

All schools offer online degrees now. The value of such degrees is debatable.

If its an online grad degree in certain fields that you are doing while working in said field, yes. Not sure about undergrad. I'm sure with the covid virtual stuff there might be a shift in perception on that though.

ETA: certain fields and degrees from certain schools.

This seems like a great market to start BSU (Baw State University).

All you need to know is if the institution is accredited by an accreditor approved by the USDOE. Beyond that it's preferred that the accreditor also has membership in the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).

If so the degree will meet the qualification for a commission in any of the US Armed Forces or civil service job. Boom! All you need to know. Any private employer or institution of higher learning has the right not to accept a degree for graduate school admission or transfer credit.

Depends on the employer and the job, but overall they are generally accepted as legit.

I got an Associates in Computer Networking from Iowa Central Community College Online. I have a Bachelor's in Accounting from ULL. All paid by the GI Bill so why not?

At my previous two jobs, any applicant that had University of Phoenix on it was an immediate toss. It didn't even matter if they would have taken minimum wage.

I dated a girl who got an online degree from Kaplan University because she literally thought it was in Kaplan, Louisiana. Special.
