The Beirut Barracks Bombings (October 23, 1983, in Beirut, Lebanon) occurred during the Lebanese Civil War when two truck bombs struck separate buildings housing United States and French military forces—members of the Multinational Force (MNF) in Lebanon—killing 299 American and French servicemen. An obscure group calling itself 'Islamic Jihad' claimed responsibility for the bombings.

The mighty dollar -- or almighty Allah I'm like the farmer, plantin words, people are seeds My truth is the soil; help you grow like trees May the children come in all colors, change like leaves but hold before you, one of those, prophetic MC's with blunted flows, seven hundred souls in me Each channelin, from past to present times, heaven shines light on those, innocent to how the world grows Some men become murderers, and some girls become hoes And you accounted for, everything that you heard Do not speak to fools; they scorn the wisdom of your words My heart is wise, bloodshot eyes, the saga never dies,,,,

Friend of mine's cousin died in that attack (Vermilion Parish). Last year while in DC for the MCM, we visited Arlington and found the memorial to those killed.
At the site, there was a bottle of whiskey (among other things) -- don't remember what kind -- with a note from a friend of one of those killed. Broke my heart.

Semper Fi Marines.
It was the biggest non-nuclear explosion since WWII
The Marine standing guard at the gate survived and was eaten up about it for years. They determined that it all happened so fast that he wouldn't have had time to put a round in the chamber, open fire, and stop the truck so it wasn't his fault. He said the last thing he remembers seeing is a smiling face from the driver's seat as it drove by.
The fricked up thing is, the marines were only there to keep the locals from killing each other.

The U. S. Marine is a professional who stands ready to fight anytime, anywhere, any enemy that the President and Congress may designate and to do so coolly, capably, and in the spirit of professional detachment. He is not trained to hate, nor is he whipped up emotionally for battle or for any other duty the Corps may be called on to perform. Patriotism and professionalism are his only two ‘isms.’
—Col Robert D. Heinl Jr. USMC (Ret) 1970
Had a conversation w many brothers... Asymmetrical warfare drives change. We Marines adapt and mourn our fallen brothers.

I used to work with a guy who was a soldier in the Army, tasked with cleaning up the bodies.

Peacekeeping is a serious mission....
A former SEAL officer that was with a platoon that was conducting operations there and usmc as well as French brass all later admitted the layout and access points were in no way capable of preventing such an attack.
While this was certainly a low point for the us military this was part of the rise of the us military....
As for the president at the time. I saw him cry real tears after a memorial service for 37 sailors killed a few years later...cried on nancys shoulder away from the media and most eyes.....I wonder if I current president has ever done that....
I left for a middle east deployment a few days later
