He needs a EKG. Better to be safe. Rule out any drinks , supplements, or OTC drugs.

Same thing happened to me around his age. My mom freaked out. Took me to UAB and had a ton of test ran. Found nothing. But the problems never went away. 15 years later, found out my body has a hard time with carbs, sugar, and the whole gluten thing. Bottom line, no reason to worry. Could be as simple as a change of diet.

My son has a condition called Wolff-Parkinson-White Syndrome, or WPW. It is basically an electrical abnormality in the heart that can be resolved through medication or a surgery called an "ablation". With WPW you have an extra electrical conduction pathway called an "accessory pathway" that can cause your heart to beat extremely fast.

My son had the surgery and has been doing well, ever since. He wrestles and runs distance in track, so he, too, is in excellent shape.

While this is still scary stuff for a parent, it is a very fixable condition.

Prayers for you situation. I wrestled and spent a lot of time around other wrestlers in HS. I'll cut to the chase in saying that some of what we did to cut weight, some of the supplements and energy drinks that we consumed, and some of our eating habits were not always the best. We were in great shape, but we weren't necessarily taking the best care of our bodies.

Make sure your kid is upfront with the doc. It could just be too much Red Bull or Monster (or caffeine)--those give me palpitations as well. At 15 odds are on his side that there isn't anything seriously wrong with him. If he's using plastic or rubber gear when he works out in order to cut water weight, tell him to knock it off and wrestle up to the next class.

My daughter has Long QT. They wanted to implant a ICD but she drug her feet. Now they say she has a less serious type and want her on beta blockers.

Hard headed

just avoids over exertion

All of what Navy Tiger said...
I remember doing some pretty stupid shite in HS to make weigh for wrestling and (an ill fated) boxing tournament.

Dehydration and/or an electrolyte imbalance can cause an irregular or rapid heartbeat.

My first thought was anxiety. But I'm no doctor..

I was having similar symptoms about a year ago. Was told that it was anxiety and heart burn. Started taking heartburn meds and haven't had a problem since.

Obviously, none of us knows yet what truly happened, but the good thing is that there are many, many possibilities as to what this could be that are easily fixed. Prayers going out that it will not be serious.

i went into the ER last summer with a ventricular tachycardia. They could never pinpoint an origin, so not all heart problems have a main cause

Exact same thing happened to me in 1996.....ran EKG and found nothing. Said drinking and stress were likely culprits.

Broke engagement to nut bag and my vitals went right back to being perfect. Doc said that decision saved my life.

There are many, many causes of an irregular heartbeat.

A very common one is also one that is of no concern.

This is the ever popular pvc, or premature ventricular contraction.

This is where it feels as if the heart skips a beat. It really doesn't skip a beat, it just fires a bit early and then pauses to make up for it. There are many causes of pvcs.

They are episodic. They can happen during exercise. Often times patients get anxious becuase the heart sometimes feels like it is pounding. Caffeine is a big cause of these is many people and so you see many cutting out caffeine for this reason.

They will do tests to make sure there is no structural abnormality causing this, and if so, if pretty much is a totally benign thing. No doubt that wrestlers being wrestlers often do things to keep their weight down that can cause this.

I get these not infrequently. I have cut out the caffeine which has almost totally gotten rid of them but find when I overtrain, I can sometimes get them.

Let the cardiologist rule out all the other potentially dangerous problems and make sure that there is not a structural component causing this, but there is a very good chance it is just pvcs.

However, I am not a cardiologist or a primary care doctor.

Anyways, hope it is just the occasional run of pvcs and everything is ok.
