Occupation Therapy for Children with ADD/ADHD

Have any of you OT parents send your child to Occupational Therapy for treatment of ADD/ADHD? If so I was curious if it helped or not. How long until you saw results? If any.

The French tend to treat ADD this way as opposed to starting with meds.
You just have to be patient and use intervention instead of screaming at them. They have trouble with impulse control. Screaming at them doesn't help them learn to manage it.

My three year old has been diagnosed with "sensory processing disorder".. So she'll be starting Occupational Therapy next week.. curious to see any good info out of this thread (not holding out great hopes for the OT to deliver)

Me either. My son basically has ADHD, but the shrink we went to won't call it that yet because he's too young. The sensory thing is an issue as well. He starts therapy today. He spent a year in speech therapy and it was awesome and it did wonders for him. I was just curious if I should be expecting the same results from this, or an I reaching. I guess I will have to wait until school starts, and progresses to really see if its working or not.

Where is he going for Pediatric OT?

I was/am convinced my boy has SPD and when they wanted to hold him back in kindergarten I pushed for some action associated with treatment. We live in a poe-dunk town so everyone's idea was to just ignore it and avoid stigmatization. fricking idiots. We held him back and now when they bring up behavioral issues I just laugh at them. frick em, I'm not medicating my boy to make him easier to manage in class...I just smirk at them and think 'deal with it'.

I was diagnosed with ADD in 2rd grade, right around the time everyone was putting their kids on it in in the latter half of the 90's.
My parents told the school and doc to get fricked and introduced me to my occupational therapists, Dr Belt and Dr Wooden Spoon.

yeah that's a pretty original thought.. just beat it out of them.. problem is I've done that and it doesn't help (at all) and it's not that fun being feared by a three year old..
I think a lot of these things kids would grow out of or learn how to cope with as they get older but therapy can help them learn to deal with things quicker and not struggle as much.. at least that's my hope

You're not doing it right. Look into exercising the limpness out of your wrist.
eta: holy shite, you actually believe a diagnosis that your three your old has ADD/ADHD? And you're sending them to Occupational Therapy? What the frick dude; you are definitely going to be detested by the kid for life.
Parents thinking they can outsource character building and instilling discipline to paid hacks.

Occupational Therapy for treatment of ADD/ADHD?
Giving them a job to help them work off their excess energy? Smart move.

I promise the beatings have been sufficient.. and my kid has not been diagnosed ADD/ADHD.. She supposedly has a sensory processing disorder.. My wifes friend is a therapist and they have cooked this thing up so if it helps great and if not i don't see how it could hurt

What is sensory processing disorder? How does it manifest itself?

In my experience such treatment only instills in the child a sense that they are not responsible for their own behavior; it impresses upon them an attitude that it is a terminal condition which excuses them from basic, fundamental principles of independence and self-control.
I'm truly not trolling you, I would be very wary of allowing someone in that field to fill your very young child's incredibly malleable mind with self-validating nonsense.

True ADD/ADHD is not a character issue or boredom. It is neurological and deals with the inability to control impulses. If it isn't managed properly it leads to other psychological issues like anxiety and depression because the individual is trying to focus on tasks and can't.

I totally agree with.. that being said my wife is really pushing for this and I'm hoping her three year old brain wont jump from what is basically playing at a therapist office to thinking there is something wrong with her and that justifies bad behavior.. I hope we can get some good out of it.
It's not an easy situation. Especially when my wife feels so strongly about it and I'm kind of on the fence. but believe me when i tell you spankings and threats of spankings (i wasn't afraid of trying this approach first) does not do anything the change her behavior.
