I loved living in LA and I had spent my life in the south....the weather is phenomenal and there are so many things to see. NYC was fun for my husband and I but nothing compares to Los Angeles....

Depends on what you like. There are benefits to both, depending on your desires. Most will tell you NYC, but I prefer La.

Surrounding areas - LA

Nyc. Endless food possibilities. Easy to get around Manhattan. More American landmarks.

LA is f$&king terrible. Hollywood is a tourist trap, not even a good one. Santa Monica is nice. Traffic is horrendous. It takes forever to get anywhere. If you want to vacation to a giant Baton Rouge with worse food, no open container laws, and a beach, be my guest. At least there's some awesome music venues like the Hollywood Bowl and great sports venues.
NYC is a fun change of pace. You can walk or take the subway everywhere. There's something for everyone with Broadway, Central Park, Ellis Island, 5th Avenue, Madison Square Garden, The Met, Natural History Museum, ect. If you want to party, there's a near endless supply of bars, night clubs, and music venues to choose from. There is also a seemingly endless supply of world class restaurants.

Well that's pretty definitive - anybody got any suggestions for off-the-beaten-path stuff to do in NYC? I mean I'm sure we'll see the Statue of Liberty and Central Park but what else is a must-do?

Only complete mouth breathing idiots would say NYC.

I would go to nyc before la. Just to see where the World Trade Center once stood and the history. Plus L.A. Has that earthquake factor.

Statue of Liberty
Don't go to the island. Just take the staten island ferry to SI, and then make the return trip on the next boat that goes back to Manhattan.
Going to the actual statute of liberty will take like 2-3 hours out of your day and the SI ferry passes right in front of the statue.
