Someone tried convincing me today that Zika is a man made virus.

I heard a interesting theory that it had something to do with genetically modified mosquitos. I forget the exact thinking but it was almost believable.

Genetically modified sterile mosquitoes is a dumb idea. They'd die off and the natural ones would survive.
They need to genetically modify mosquitoes that have a significant reproductive advantage over the natural ones but can be wiped out by a specific human controlled trigger. Let the modified ones take over and then press the button in a few years.

The sterile mosquitos are supposed to mate with the regular ones and have sterile offspring. That's how it works.
