Trying to keep these threads going. Who had the better supporting cast, Napoleon Bonaparte or Alexander the Great?

It's kind of a difficult question because I don't think there is even much of a consensus as to who were the best generals of each of them.

But to pick a few for each, let's go with maybe the following for Alexander:

Antipater, Ptolemy, Seleucus, Antigonas, Perdiccas and Lysimachus and Cassander

And for Napoloeon, maybe the following:

Soult, Lannes, Massena, Berthier, Davout, Suchet and let's say Ney for a 7th.

(Feel free to add or subtract from either list if you think there were better ones).

I tend to favor Napoleon's Generals since war had become more complicated and it seems Napoleon's Generals found themselves in more critical independent commands. The Generals of Alexander with the exception of Antipater against the Spartans mostly went after Iranic tribesmen when given some independence.

But mayb it doesn't seem fair since Napoleon historical record is better documented.

Anyway I pick Davout and Antipater as the top of each.

Alexander, simply due to the fact that once he conquered armies, he took their generals and made their lives VERY easy. Not to mention he went up against near-impossible strategic odds at several turns (forget the mountain pass fort, drawing a blank, but conquering the sheer numbers of Persians 2-ish years before his death would require great generals because of being outmanned).

Napolean had great generals, but warfare had become very structured and seemed to be closer to battlefield checkers/chess. Alexander just went for it, and had such confidence in doing so that it spilled over to his generals. If he told them it would win the war, they'd have marched their regiment off of a cliff.

Impossible to say because of the facts that are known (or not known). Plenty of documentation on the frenchie's crew is out there but so little is known of alexander's generals. There is some written history but with what is there it would be purely conjecture.

I'm a firm believer in the theory that neither of these men actually existed. So if we're comparing military generals of fictional characters, I'd go with princess Leia. Any one of her generals would and did lay down their lives for her and she had the most gifted trap-finding admirals in the galaxy.

I'm kinda leaning to Alexander's guys. Mostly because several of them went onto rule parts of his empire after he died (though they did tend to fight it out with each other.). I think Ptolemy was pretty successful in founding a dynasty in Egypt). But I think a couple of Napoleons guys also became kings. And I think one still has his his heirs on the throne of maybe Sweden?

Well, I wasn't there personally. But a lot of it is fairly well documented. Especially Napoleon. (I'm a reading junkie and tend to get interested in different topics and read a lot of stuff about them until I move on to the next thing that catches my attention).

Probably so. But other than a very little with the original Call of Duty computer game I haven't played many board or computer games dealing with warfare.

Not sure.

I know the names of Alexander's generals. I don't know the names of Napoleon's.

I guess that's something.

I think that the fact that one or more of Alexander's generals, or at least their descendants/dynasties, found their way into the bible gives them a bit of a boost in the name recognition department.
