Have walked in it with some buddies for the past 3 years. St. Patrick's day is my birthday as well. It's pure unadulterated debauchery.

Thanks for the responses fellas. My dad was in bacchus for 10 yrs and I went to about 8 of the balls (rode 2x), i was in my 20s then. We would get a balcony at the royal sonesta for the weekend across from ricks caberet. plenty of alcohol and "other shite" to make it a party. We were getttin hammered daily. Im just tryin to compare the two. Is there anything unique to buy or bring to help stick out besides beads and feather boas? Just wanting to make sure I get the most of it.

By a couple roles of shamrock stickers. Put one on their cheek and kiss it. They love it.

Two blocks into the parade you will toss the ice chest....nothing like pulling something through a sea of people.

Stickers, canes, temp tattoos....the ladies love them. Don't carry too much weight. Especially if it's in the 80-90s and you're in a tux.

The levels of drunkenness I have achieved and I have seen others achieve marching in this parade far exceed any other event I have been a part of.

Just make sure you have responsible people with you, or you can end up in the back of some stranger's pick up truck on Prytania, blacked out without your car keys, being questioned by police while your wife and kids are waiting for you at the end of the parade with her parents.....other than that, it's a great time.

To the OP- definitely do it. It is a great event that I may try to walk in this year.

I used to walk with the Emerald Society in the Irish Channel Parade. Two pieces of advice. One. If you wear a kilt, either wear shorts underneath or try like hell to remember you're going commando when you pop a squat on the end of one of the floats. Two. Alcohol/water/alcohol to give you a chance of staying hydrated or else you're in for the mother of all hangovers the next day.
