Nah, I think some Turks got really bored and lugged a bunch of timber up a mountain and built an Ark that just happened to be the same size as the one detailed in the Bible.

Don't take the old testament literally...

Hmm sounds like something the devil would say.

It's a blanket statement people say when they are not informed, just like "People have always said we're in the end times.".

I was goign through a bunch of old stuff at my parents' house while I was in town last week. Found my old Far Side books. Laughed for a good half hour going through them.

If you really want to have a spirited discussion on old testament then talk about the Nephilim

It's not that unreasonable to think that a guy in the stone age built a huge boat, lured two of every species of animal on earth on that boat, fed them and kept them alive for 6 weeks.

It makes sense if you don't think about it.

Either way, I think it's weird how it has become such a mainstay in children's stories. They make it all seem cute with the animals coming in two by two, but ignore the part of the story where god decided to kill every human on the planet but Noah's family.

why would I not believe a story concocted by illiterate peasants in the desert 2000 years ago?

My grandparents are very devout southern Baptist, and so of course they believe in the Ark, but I never expected to hear their response when I brought this up to them. We all know that the Bible cannot be taken literal in its scripture at times. You also have to consider the people during the time of Noah's Ark. To them, their world was the immediate region surrounding them. They had no idea how large the world was. It's not hard to imagine that maybe a large flood happened at some point, and Noah was able to build a boat capable of holding much of the local wildlife, and be able to manage for that amount of time. This seems much more reasonable to me, and maybe even possible. But like I said, the Bible can't be taken literally at times, and we also have to remember the known world to people of this time period. Give things a couple hundred years, and this story can be exaggerated beyond belief.

I told my grandma this expecting her to not have considered it, and even though she's 87 and set in her beliefs, she too considered that this may have actually been what happened. It's an inspiring story, nonetheless, and I'm sure people have made it larger than life over time to make sure it has more appeal.
