Once again when you apply logic to the proposal, and analyze the numbers; it's obvious that these type plans won't come close to doing what many believe, and they will quickly become an albatross on the budget.

I love passenger trains, but after reviewing this project, I’ve reluctantly concluded that it is likely to cost much more than anyone thinks and will not produce any of the benefits claimed for it.

In fact, there’s no reason to expect the project could work. The Federal Railroad Administration says higher-speed trains have an advantage over driving or flying only in corridors of 200 to 600 miles. In 80-mile corridors such as the one between New Orleans and the capital city, trains simply cannot compete against the convenience of taking your car where you want to go when you want to go there. Add to this the fact that self-driving cars are likely to become a reality before this project is completed, and the market for such trains will be insignificant.

Use the money on more loop studies.

It will never be successful until you can convince white southerners that public transportation isn't only for poor black people.

OT experts have said this for a while.

wouldn't it sink in the swamp?

Of course it won't. What good is getting a train station from one city to the other when neither has adequate mass transit to get you from that station to your final destination efficiently?

How about a bridge south of BR?

What's the mileages between some cities in the Northeast? Philly to DC? DC to NYC? NYC to Baltimore?

All under 200 miles... but those cities already have public transportation in place at the destination, and large populations that rely on it and don't own cars.

I would be down for a train that went Lafayette-BR-New Orleans. Maybe even add LC in there.

Make the train run along I-10 to Houston with stops in New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Lafayette, lake Charles and Houston.

I get that, but I feel like it could work given enough time to show that it's a better/comparable option to driving your personal vehicle.

I think that's the #1 issue at hand here.. There's a massive lack of good mass transportation. There may not ever be..If the southern population wasn't so reliant on cars and so reluctant to take public transportation, it'd probably work.

Personally, I think it'd be awesome to get to new orleans on a train in ~2 hours and not have to worry about driving home... as long as once I get off of the train, the public transportation in New Orleans could get me where I want to go in a reasonable time. Same goes for Baton Rouge.

Or it could be cars are cheaper, more efficient, and flexible.
Let's give cars their due.

Great idea, but it would be dirty as shite and wrecked by bums and other people who would have to be given free access to it.
If only people who could pay to use it were allowed on board it might have a chance, unfortunately that would never fly.
