What else would you like a company like that to do? Give everyone the day off with pay? There's still a job to finish

Wow, so you kill a man and its back to work for yall.

We had a couple of recordables happen really close together once that could have easily been deadly.

Shut down the site from thurs to sunday

So the young man that died is a friend of one of my good friends. Y'all know how stories morph, so this may not be the exact truth, but this is what I was told. I was told the scaffolding was red flagged yesterday morning and in a rush to get the job done, it was green lit. A pipe fell on his lanyard and the scaffolding didn't support him. His yo-yo failed as well. Very sad and just terrible. RIP

If that's what happened OSHA will passing out some hefty fines. However, that's not the story I heard from CWI who was working there.

I don't think safety harnesses had been invented at that point.

Most of the steel workers in New York City are Mohawk Indians from around Montreal. They have been doing it probably for 100 years and have pretty much no fear of heights.

I get the feeling you've never worked on a high scale industrial project before....

I've seen projects get shut down for several days for less than a recordable while the investigation goes on. And these were schedule driven projects with 600+ people working a day.

It just so happens that the incident that happened was the same situation/incident that had killed someone 10+ years before that.

Nothing I have said is "edgy," I was just asking what the company is supposed to do if a moment of silence and reading about him wasn't enough for that poster. It's a massive site with tons of different companies and contractors workings. It's unfortunate but shutting it down for a few days isn't going to fix anything.

Not turning wrenches or climbing scaffolding but I work in the industry and have spent time on plenty of sites.

I have no clue what actually happened, but with regard to the scaffold tagging:

Aren't the safety inspections fairly frequent? I've been on projects where we (as a contractor) inspected our worksites at the start of every 12 shift. Then you've got the facility owner's safety staff watching out as well. Isn't it possibe that a minor problem on the scaffold was discovered, immediately red flagged, "quickly" (as least as quickly as you can make anything happen), resolved, and then green tagged as safe?

Modern harnesses and shock absorbing lanyards are great, but I'd still hate to fall. I remember wearing a safety belt and about a 3' rope lanyard, thinking "this thing will frick me up so bad, I'll wish I was dead."

Does this mean it was an incomplete scaffold? It just seems that so much shite went wrong at once. Sometimes you can take every precaution and things still go to shite. I work right down the road with people that knew the young man. It's tragic.

lack of PPE

That's almost certainly the case. I was on a job-site and a steel worker started to have a seizure while putting down decking. Luckily, he followed protocol and was safely dangling by his harness. Great group of guys got him down safely and quickly. Ended up being a blood sugar issue.
