US dilemma: sit back and wait for NK to kill untold amounts in Seoul, or strike first and accept that China is going to use that against you in the region diplomatically. Russia will use it against you when you claim to be the good guy, Iran, et al.

NK dilemma: wait for US to attack first and maybe get wiped out without throwing a punch while hoping in vain China will come to the rescue, or attack first and kill untold amounts in Seoul before US wipes you out.

But why is it a US dilemma? Why can't a whole bunch of countries closer to NK decide it's their issue and they can deal with it?

Because they would attack S Korea or Japan who are important allies, especially as we try to maintain influence in the area as China continues to fill out as a world power.

Now we could ignore it, and hope China doesn't take advantage, and that our other allies wouldn't be too bothered by us not keeping our word with Japan and S. Korea. Also hope that N Korea doesn't develop something that could reach us.

Sooo....why aren't SK and Japan attacking NK? Why the US?

And the US could provide ancillary support, along with SK and Japan, shouldn't that be enough to take down the mighty NK?

Kill a lot of South Koreans who are their enemy? Force the US to come around the world and fight and hope China shows up, or at least postures enough that they continue to exist?

People have fought battles they probably cant win since the beginning of time.

They probably are not technically capable of pulling it off without risking massive death toll in S Korea and other parts of the region. Most of the military pundits I've heard talking about this say its going to be damn difficult even for us to pull off an attack on N Korea with out them unleashing a massive amount of artillery on to S. Korea.

NK is stronger than SK and Japan combined?

Also, do other European countries not care about this? It's closer to home for them than the US?

Fwiw, these are honest questions. I don't know the details too much on this, it just never makes sense to me why other countries can't take the lead, and it always has to be the US who takes the lead.

Because we want to maintain influence in that area and if Japan and S Korea didn't need our military spport we would have less influence.

As far as taking down N Korea, nobody knows. The army could break immediately or the propaganda could be strong and they could dig in in the mountains and hold out for however long.

Yeah probably. Japan was largely disarmed post WWII. Not sure they have much capability at all right now.

N Korea is the 4th largest army in the world. What they lack in sophistication they make up for in numbers. Japan and SKorea are not capable.

Why it it more important for us to maintain influence compared to all of Europe and/or a bunch of those countries, much closer to this situation?
