This news kills me.

I'm no Mitch fan by far, but you have to face the fact that new orleans' population is filled with uncivilized hood rats. It's not the government's job to turn people into respectable citizens.

Homicide is an utter disaster and will remain that way as long as Jimmie Turner is in charge of it. Detectives are fleeing for the TIGER unit as quickly as they can. Another one yesterday.
care to share more? im genuinely interested in the details of the issue with jimmie turner, and also how an understaffed low functioning homicide unit can be bleeding members to TIGER (is it at least 1 out 1 back in)

Up 70%?? If those statues could walk they would leave New Orleans on their own.

Looks like more and more displaced Katrina evacuees are making their way back

How much you want to be that all other crime is "down" beside rape and murder?
it has a mixed report on those in the link (rape down, but who knows whats going on with classifications on a lot of that stuff).
i do hate seeing we are pacing that high before summer even arrives though. going to be a rough year, and i dont think we end up seeing the NOPD growth that they keep talking about when showing off recruit classes. Lots of guys coming up on their chance to bail in the next couple years.

Because no one gets shot in the Quarters or Uptown... Oh wait

Fair point...but it IS the city government's job to provide its citizens with a functional court system, as well as a properly staffed and trained Police Department. New Orleans and its "leaders" have been failing miserably at this for decades now.

Monuments are working overtime

City data itself is actually kept very well and is public. Jeff Asher (@crimealytics) is a statistician who crunches the numbers and puts out some incredible charts on Twitter on a daily basis.
The issue is what underlies the data. Because of the manpower shortage, you have two things happening. First, calls are being downgraded from Code 2s (put on lights and get there) to Code 1s (make a list and show up when you have time) in order to attempt to prioritize the most serious and to also make it sound good when they get on the radio and ask for the backlog. Instead of 12 Code 2s and 20 code 1s for a district, you now hear 2 code 2s and 30 code 1s. It's wildly abused right now. I heard a call in the 7th last week that came in as a Code 2,signal 94 - shots fired at an apartment complex, with the apartment manager having the subject detained in the apartment office. They were so thin, Supervisor gets on and says "make that a Code 1, tell the manager to call back if the subject becomes irate."
The issue that creates is that when the officer finally shows up to a code 1, the situation is often diffused, the victim is gone, and it's marked "GOA" for gone on arrival. Meaning it didn't happen.
Additionally, officers are being told to make everything they can municipal in order to go along with Mitch's jail size fight. They ran a story a few months back about a woman who was sitting in her kitchen and had a bullet come through the wall and whiz past her head. Her neighbor had shot his gun accidentally. That's clearly a negligent discharge, but NOPD issued a summons for disturbing the peace.
So, while the underlying data is being cooked, the numbers themselves are very transparent and public.

I'd be willing to bet new orleans pours more money and resources into it's police and judicial system than a city like London. But londons murder rate is extremely lower than NOLA, and you know why? It's not because of money and resources, it's because the citizens of London are civilized.
That's something the government can't fix.

Whenever I check the cable listing to see when "The first 48" is on...my first thought is..."let's see how many episodes feature New Orleans tonight."

Good job Mitch, you've created quite the legacy, you don't need to worry about pulling down monuments to leave your mark.
I'm not a fan of Mitch, but to his defense what do you expect him to do to lower the murder rate? Doing so needs a complete mindset and culture change of the people and that's really out of his control. Until the people start valuing life and parents start actually "parenting" instead of letting their kids run wild, there's not a damn thing Mitch or any other mayor will be able to do to fix the problem.

Legalize the green and put poor troubled kids in boarding schools

Spot on. Conservatives are all "small government" until a Democrat is in office, then they expect him to solve every problem.
