A word about the Canadian Casual Identification Card (Carte d'Identification Temporaire Canadienne):
Make sure to not lose the Temporary ID Card you get at the Border Crossing from the Canadian Customs Agents. The fine is like $500 (CN) and they are pissed to be bothered about it. You have to turn it back in at the end of your visit.

I am heading to North Dakota and thought it would be kinda cool to check out Canada. I've never really been to a foreign country though and am worried about little stuff like drinking the water and if I will stand out. Plus other nations kind of hate Americans. Anyone have any experience with Canada? What kind of culture shock can an American expect, mates?
Culture shock?
There is more of a shock from Texas to Louisiana or the south to the north than there is going from New York to Toronto (never been to Alberta, Manitoba or Saskatchewan though)

From Detroit to Windsor...
Thinking you will be killed to wanting to kill yourself.
Seattle to Vancouver...
Clean modern city to modern New Orleans-esque city that smells like weed at all times

Canadians are find with Americans but they are much stricter about access and try access to the U.S. NCic database so a lot of misdemeanors like duis will keep you out if they check

You will definitely stand out. It will be below freezing in southern Canada soon and you will be the only person wearing a coat. Canadians just let their fur grow out for winter.

Watch out for the big ol' moose. Friend of mine went up there a couple of weeks ago to go duck hunting and hit a dam moose. Car totalled, stiches all over.
BTW, they have Universal health care and don't treat until you pay.

Just say "aboot" when beginning a question and end it with "eh?". You'll fit right in.

ive been all up and down the Maine/Canadian woods the past three years
not once have i come close to hitting a moose and to do so you have to be either extremely unlucky or a pretty bad driver, so that sucks for your friend.. it always seems to happen to tourist

Most idiotic thread ever.
It's a PITA coming back from there, but basically the same country and they have some things better than us. I shouldn't play the know it all card too much, but when you live across from Windsor and get bombed there at 19-20, going to Canada is old hat.

if all that happened was he just got stitches and he was riding in a SUV/truck, then he sounds like he is one lucky dude

Depends on how many years have surpassed since your DUI arrest. If you went to treatment and prove you're reformed you can request a waiver to get you access to Canada. Basically, a DUI is a felony in Canada.
