Fool, the answer to your issues is a slingbox

Ahh...this may work. So, I would need two of these and connect them to two boxes that I don't use that often? I say this because I assume I would have to watch the same thing that the TV connected to that cable box is watching.

I also need to buy two of those USB products.

I don't want to buy all of this crap and it not do what I want it to do.

If he got a slingbox and a Roku or whatever for a few TVs in the living room, he could use the box that he has in his bedroom or wherever via the Slingbox app on his television. It's really not difficult.

So they would run a second cable from the street into my house? I didn't think of that option.

Lets say you have a TV with a box in your bedroom. You would hook up the slingbox to that cable box. Then when you're in your living room on a spare tv, you can either hook up your laptop or launch the slingbox app on the roku, chromecast, appletv, or whatever and it will give you access to your box.

Does DirecTV have a limit similar to Cox?

Someone at Directv told me a few years ago the limit was 16 receivers. I think that had more to do with the dish being able to handle that many receivers than directv limiting the # of tv's.

I have currently have 7 (living room, 4 bedrooms, office, & bath). One day I'll put a tv on the patio and I also have a common area (future play room for the kids) that isn't being used.

No problem, I use it pretty often when I'm on the road for work. If you can hardline your slingbox to your router, it's better but I'm pleasantly surprised by how good it works over WiFi, if you get one of the models that supports it.

There are a few options:

First, I'd threaten to cancel and switch to direct TV or other service that allows you more boxes, if you aren't under contract currently. They'd be pretty stupid to allow you to cancel over 1 additional box, which probably cost them peanuts to let you have.

If they say to go pound sand or you are under contract, you could get a slingbox or switch to another service provider.

1.) Make sure all TV's have WiFi (that they're Smart TV's).
2.) Buy 6 Apple TV's at $69/apiece.
3.) Pay for ESPN.
4.) Use WatchESPN
5.) ??????
6.) Profit

see if they'll give you a cable card and purchase one of these: samsung cable card tuner

or you could purchase a silicon dust network tuner. it'll broadcast to 3 devices with 1 cable card. SD works well to any device. for HD you would need a PC, XBOX360, or PS3.

I have 7 boxes, 3 in the man cave/detached garage, with direct TV. If you're putting 3 tvs in your man cave and are a football fan, you should be with directv anyway for the Sunday ticket. I also paid the installer a few dollars extra to put up a 2nd dish behind the garage so I wouldn't have to run wires from the house to the garage.

Switch to dish and get as many boxes as you want for $7 each.

If your OP is accurate, you can afford to buy out your remaining cox contract.

Samsung sm530cf or buy your own Tivo and extender.

Tivo would be about $500 for the 6-tuner roamio pro (maybe $350-400ish for the 4tuner version) + $150/mini to "extend" the tuner from the roamio. $500 more will get you lifetime tivo service without a monthly fee. About $14/mo if not. You'll owe Cox about $2/Mo for the cablecard.

The Samsungs are getting hard to come by. I picked one up at a Wal Mart for $40. They go online for $130+ consistently. It's a single-tuner cable box with no DVR and requires a cablecard per box.

Those are the easiest two solutions.

ETA: a pair of Slingbox and sling catchers is just as easy, assuming you don't want separate programming on the TV that will be sending its picture to the living room (so you tune your bedroom TV to the watching room and see it there without moving the cable box).
