So I am a newer resident to Colorado and this will be my first year skiing here. I have skied a few times throughout my life but I am definitely going to be going to ski school. Wife has never skied.

Right now we are looking at getting passes to Keystone and Arapaho Basin.

I was told that we should buy boots and then just demo skis all year until we find what we like.

Any other tips or feedback would be awesome. Tell me about other bad arse spots.

Winter Park

Beaver Creek

Breckinridge

Steamboat Springs

So many good places. Keystone is a good start for learning. Enjoy Colorado

I support the choice of Keystone both as a ski resort and for ski instruction. It's less crowded and (imo) better skiing than most of the other big resorts. A-Basin is pretty advanced, very few green runs and the blues are blacks everywhere else. Breck is another good option (and probably on your same season pass) but it's really crowded sometimes. On the plus side there's lots of gentle green and blue terrain. Copper Mtn. is a great resort but not part of the Vail Resorts conglomerate so your pass won't play there.

Also for instruction, I would look into Harb Ski Systems. They teach out of Sol Vista, just up the road from Winter Park. They teach a method that takes you straight to parallel skiing instead of going through the pizza/french fry mess, most of which you'll need to unlearn at some point. I was carving by the end of the first (and only) lesson. What I did is make an appointment with them for a lesson and boot fitting. They took my measurements and built me a boot insert right on the spot. Then taught me to ski. I highly recommend them. I also ended up getting a pair of skis from them the next season. My right leg is bowlegged by a 1° angle and that was causing me not to be able to turn left very well. So they put a shim under the binding and it made an incredible difference.

If Gart Bros still does Sniagrab, that is a great place to snag gear. You missed it this year but next year it is during Labor Day weekend.

Winter Park, Steamboat, Wolf Creek and A basin are my favorites. Have a ball

Wolf Creek ski area around South Fork CO. Most snow in CO and it's not commercialized.

I spend a lot of time there. My Dad has a place in South Fork.

I love Keystone. If the pass is open, it's much easier to get to than the other resorts. I'll be up there in February. Enjoy!

Just get an Epic local pass.

$550 i think.

Good for unlimited skiing at breck, keystone and a basin. Plus 10 total days in vail, beaver creek.

Crazy to think it's already so close to ski season. I hope I get to go this year.

First - congrats on the move to Colorado - I have been looking for a way to move there or Utah prior to retirement.

I go to Keystone for quality and value - I am not OT baller enough to make it to Park City every year.

Keystone never disappoints and never hits my pocketbook as hard as other ski areas could.

Sure keystone lacks some upper level amenities and frills but less crowds and some decent beginner to black level skiing makes it worth the stop there.

Also don't forget about some of the smaller locals places like Eldora, Loveland, Monarch and Ski Cooper. Very good value, crowds are not bad and very good skiing. Not as swank as the big resorts on I-70.

For the most accurate snow and storm forecast go to Open snow

Joel does a real good job with it and takes into account microclimates and everything.

Don't drive a 2wd up the mountain when they advise against it. As someone else said traffic is nuts on the weekends heading up on Friday and down on Sunday and heavy before a storm moves in.

It's a good idea to wear a helmet, and don't eat to many edibles before you go. Lots of people hit trees last year doing that.

You can still get boots on sale.

Vail and Breck are probably the best ski areas. Arguably, of course, but a vail pass is pretty expensive. Resident local pass is a little cheaper but excludes thanksgiving and Christmas weeks.

The A basin stays open later. Was dam near open through June last year.
