That's why you have internal QA, and if you are worried about an internal auditor having his results quashed or chased off for not simply checking the right boxes, hire an outside auditing firm to do your QA.

Just looking at the raw ingredient deck, my guess would be the probiotic supplements. Thats kind of trendy right now and does some good things for regularity. Regularity and farts can be a double edged sword unfortunately.

Switch it up to another Wild formula if you're happy overall, if that doesn't work, I'd check out a Nutro or Merrick product and see what happens. Can't go wrong with any of those and it really can be a trial and error deal.

Also, when switching over, it should go without saying, best to buy small bags first. As a rule, the palletizer any high end brand is using, the dogs generally* love it but you def. don't want to buy a huge bag and for whatever reason, your buddy won't eat it.

Got it.

You and I will differ on what we both think is good food. For my dogs, it's Acana/Orijen with some Primal raw, but I realize that's not in everyone's budget, and at the end of the day, the majority of people will gravitate to the dog food that suits their wallet.

That doesn't mean I think those companies are infallible, it just means I think their commitment to a better kibble is demonstrable compared to other companies.

You have "internal" QA sitting at that manufacturing site?

What if your process is different and they switch line. Baw making $9/hour doesn't follow your protocol and drops a nice piece of metal into the kibble line and your detector doesn't kick out.

Hundred of variables get added to an already extremely complex supply chain.

The risk is much lower on the human edible side. You're using food grade products that are generally less risk.

Add in petfood grade/feed grade component and your risk is 100x higher.

I'm with you man. Those are both great brands. Acana doesn't outsource. Raw foods scare the living hell out of me but I understand the attraction and nutritional value.

Just want people to be careful on the value of "no by products". It has a nice ring to it, I know, but the logic behind it in the US if flawed.

In Europe, the most food crazy place on the planet, you simply have "poultry meal".

Chicken Meal is entirely a US invention.

How is that concern different within your own manufacturing plant? It's still a $9/hr baw and it's still a bad metal detector.

At least with an outside plant, you can hold them partially responsible, SLA breaches etc.

Yeah, that's what drew me to Champion Pet Foods (Acana/Orijen) is that they control everything from start to finish.

They employ the ranchers, farmers, transport, processing all the way up to distribution to independent retailers. They even provide their catfish farmers the feed for their catfish they are so exacting. It's an amazing operation. And their new Kentucky kitchen is insane.

It's really hard to find fault with their business model, but all those great aspects come at a cost...

Last I checked a 25lb bag of their Tundra formula was over $100.

And they're making at least 30-40% on that.

It's a killer business model, with those margins, they do very well, even at their size.

You can get money from a recall etc, but the damage to your brand overall is hard to value.

Just look at the above comments regarding blue...

I really don't think its an argument regarding the risk levels of internal production vs co man, co pack.

For the money, ol roy is a solid product, especially if your dog likes it. It's heavily grain based, which is debatable from a nutrition stance but at the end of the day, I've seen a lot of dogs eat their own shite so go figure.

That being said, it is co-manned but I don't really have problem with value brands being co-manufactured. The ingredient decks are so simple, the risk is low.

I have a problem with premium brands doing it and then selling it as premium food.

The Kirkland's brand is made by Diamond and is really good. I'm not sure who makes their "Nature's Domain" food but that one has a salmon recipe.

It's also available at my local feed store instead of sending more money to Bezos and Amazon, which is a huge plus for me.
Amazon has very low margins. I dont shop on amazon as much any more because they decided to help Louisiana take more money from its citizen by charging tax. And now it is cheaper to buy from other online retailers.... the main reason Amazon was so popular. not anymore.

Hurts our business too. Brick and Morter is best for the overall economy honestly.

Reading ingredient decks and seeing the packaging is appealing to me. I like buying food in the store.
