Hey you said 4 or 5 star rating.

You gonna pay for quality foods.

Also something to think about here, a better food gives better nutritional value. Dog wont have to eat quite as much to function.

Yes, many vets make money selling high-end or specialty dog food.

Nothing Hill's makes is high-end or specialty, nor is Royal Canin, another "high-end" option Vets sell.

However, they get to choose which ones they want to offer, based on their 8 years of schooling and experience in animal medicine.

Again, Vet schools do not focus on nutritional needs for dogs. They focus on medical needs. Two of my friends from high school are vets, and they've corroborated this.

It's not all about kickbacks per se... if there's a better brand than, Science Diet per your example, they will decide to carry that one, and get kickbacks from the new company.

Generally speaking, most vets don't invest their own time to learn about a "better" food. Hill's in particular is so ingrained in the Vet profession, many don't question that there are much better options out there. You are starting to see more Vets research, but for every one Vet clinic stocked with any independent brand dog food, there are twenty that only stock Hill's and Royal Canin.

If a Vet stocks a food other than Hill's or RC, it is usually at a high investment and lower margin than they get from those two. Most small companies have a frequent buyer program (buy 10 bags at once and get one) but none that I'm aware of offer monetary kickbacks like Hill's.

4) By-product

Do you even know what "by product" means? And that the US is the only country in the world that has the AAFCO definition of "chicken by product" meal.

It's bullshite marketing. You get more protein from chicken by than you do from chicken meal.

Unless it's fresh protein, it's all by product from the human protein side.

the coconut oil is bs btw. Dogs don’t have the same makeup as humans and their bodies literally can’t process coconut oil. So you are just wasting your money.

Also Hills Science diet is one of the best brands for numerous reason. None of which is kickbacks for vets.

Why would you buy something made by someone else when you can buy from an actual manufacturer?

I never mentioned meal. Meal is fine as long as it's created from fresh, food-grade meats.

Meal =/= by-product.

It seems to me, as it pertains to dog food, you do no know what by-product is.

I’ll just go ahead and completely disagree with this.

Correct. Both actually make their own food.

Pretty sure Taste of the Wild is Co-Man trash.

Along with much of the Blue product out there, they only have 1 plant, soon to be 2, but are still farming out much of their production.

By from companies that actually make their own food Mars (Nutro, Iams, Euk, RC, Crave, Pedigree) Nestle (Purina, Merrick) and Fromm if you want to spend a ton.

Half of the brands people have listed are just brands, 100% marketing and don't even have their own facilities or quality control.

While there is some refute just like every topic, everything i have researched says there are benefits orally and topically. plus the stuff is cheap from amazon.

Meal is a by product. It literally comes out of the exact same rendering facility that chicken "by product" comes out of. the AAFCO labelling is BS IMO.

Amazing what people will buy into if its written on a label or you put Rachel Ray's face on.

I work for a petfood company, just shooting ya'll straight.

90% of the "Trends" you're buying are complete BS.

By all means, keep buying the $50/bag stuff, it's lining our pockets but at least buy it from someone not printing a fancy bag and fancy name and filling it with 3rd party kibble.

Hey if you think it works then have at it.

But they don’t have the proper enzyme to break down coconut oil. That’s just a medical fact.

Royal and Science Diet do have their places but only if you see serious health issues or specific concerns with what they're not eating.

Most of the additional SKUs are 100% marketing play.
