We seriously need to invest in a meteor/comet detection and destruction/diversion system. All it would take is one of a decent size hitting us and civilization ends. And they are out there, millions of them.

We have a diversion system in place. It's called the moon.

We don't need Bruce Willis, we need investments in infrared telescopes that monitor any objects in our solar system and their respective orbits to make sure they don't cross ours. Comets and asteroids do hit planets (that's why they are all covered in craters!) and it's only a matter of time before a decent sized one hits us, and that would be more devestating than any earthquake or hurricane.

NASA's detection departments are grossly underfunded. We don't have the equipment to monitor what's out there, only the "shiny" stuff that we managed to catch on a scope. We need a network of space based infrared telescopes monitoring the entire sky.

They have monitoring systems in place. We're lucky jupiter takes a lot of garbage that otherwise might impact the earth.

Outer space is the most terrifying and fascinating thing at the same time.

Without the impacts that have hit earth, we wouldn't be here today.

NASA has a program called the Near-Earth Object program. It monitors asteroids. They're not coming nearly as close as you think they are. The universe is a pretty big place

Earth has been hit numerous times. Without erosion our planet would look exactly like the moon.

It has, but not by catastrophic sized meteors during the history of our monitoring system....

I can't even begin to dissect why your "earth would look exactly like the moon" statement is wrong. Try physics, gravity, mass, orbits, etc.. earth is COMPLETELY different from the moon for many reasons.
