I’m sorry. I majored in Economics but that was a while ago…if the owner paid for the servers at their desired wages and had to raise prices to afford that…where would the costs go?

It'd be interesting to see. I think at first they'd pay more to employees and raise cost of food, but the free market may force them to lower cost of food and have fewer employees. I think it'd land somewhere in the middle.
ETA:
But apologies, I just minored in Economics.

I already refuse to tip unless it’s for sit down service. I think I will just start tossing a $5 on the table for sit down, too. If you read articles and forums, these service folk act entitled and ungrateful anyway.

Tipping at service counters is fricking absurd to me. Why am I tipping at Chipotle? I do it, but I hate myself for it.
I do wonder if they expect a tip or is it just part of the software many use now and it just tip shame people that are afraid to hit 0 there, so they're happy with whatever they get

Let me tell you a little story about a boy named Suh.

You realize you have to INCLUDE tips right? Additionally, as I said service does tend to go down but people adjust and get used to it.
Things done differently in Europe at restaurants is:
1.) No free refills of soda or non alcohol
2.) water also often times sold by the container
3.) Servers have more tables
4.) Slower service, people take their time.

Any time I see an iPad I know I'm about to be asked to tip for something that I didn't have to tip for 5-10 years ago.
This has more to do with the payment companies finding one more way to increase the transaction and make more money.

yeah two large dogs
see I don't get why its expected. They have their price, I accept that, they do the job, I pay at the end. That should be the end of the transaction.

All costs are passed on to the consumer.

Juts got off a cruise (inb4trashy) with auto tips added to our bill.
Automatic gratuity being added should only apply to larger groups at restaurants. Mainly since that'll be the one of, if not the only table that server is waiting on for an hour or more. And getting stiffed by a big table during lunch/dinner rush would mean that server probably isn't making shite for that shift.

Businesses would pass the costs on to consumers if we eliminated tipping.
Servers would make substantially less and the service we would receive would be on par with the shite service you get in Europe. Here, quality service is so engrained we get upset when someone is noticeably not providing quality service - in Europe, you just expect bad service.
That doesn't mean tipping is out of control. But the fault lays at the feet of the service providers lobbying to get tips included in every single transaction imaginable.

Seems like the rest of the world found a more efficient system while we here in the US are still guessing and arguing what’s the right amount to pay.

He should be able to afford a few dollars here and there with his 80 million dollars

They’ve admitted they. It can be turned off bc it’s automatically on. They just don’t. It’s easy to hit “no” after a couple of times.

I get tipping and why its done in the restaurant business...for servers
but I don't get why tipping is expected in other areas where people are paid a wage. For example, we pay over $200 to have the dogs groomed, why is a tip expected on top of that?
Well said

Sadly a lot of businesses that do auto tips won’t even pass it all to the workers.
When possible I give cash tips directly to servers who do a good job

He’s not wrong food service workers should be paid a fair wage and customers should not be expected to subsidize that in the form of a “tip”….if that means food price increases so be it at least everyone pays the same.
