For those that don't know, Suh is a former NFL player.

quote:

This year I spent a lot more time abroad and got used to not tipping.

Got back to the US and had sticker shock every time I had to add +20% to my bill.

So I did some research, trying to answer the question–why are we one of the few places in the world with tipping?

quote:

Turns out, we got tipping from Europe

There was a long history there of rich folks leaving a little extra for lower class service people.

In the 1800s, American tourism exploded in Europe.

Many travelers thought this was a commendable thing and wanted to bring it back.

quote:

Unfortunately, it was quickly turned into a way for businesses to hire the immigrants and new freed slaves that were entering the American labor market.

They hired for basically nothing and asked customers to make up the difference.

Tried to make it feel philanthropic.

quote:

A lot of people didn’t like this and a few states even outlawed tipping for a while in the early 1900s.

But as we know, America is famously pro business.

Once owners got a taste of paying very little and passing on the costs, it was only gonna end one way.

He's right. It is out of control. But so are so many other things in the country. Like people being allowed to identify as something they're biologically not.

Juts got off a cruise (inb4trashy) with auto tips added to our bill. I have no issue with it if the want to eliminate tipping and just increase the price by that amount. I still added additional for the workers I dealt with that went way above and beyond, but some people are shitheads and need to have the tip built into their price to pay it.

Any time I see an iPad I know I'm about to be asked to tip for something that I didn't have to tip for 5-10 years ago.

I get tipping and why its done in the restaurant business...for servers

but I don't get why tipping is expected in other areas where people are paid a wage. For example, we pay over $200 to have the dogs groomed, why is a tip expected on top of that?

Service at most restaurants in Europe also suuuucks. A lot of them have a ton of tables also, and they aren't in a hurry. Why should they be? Sure, plenty of places you are supposed to take your time and I get that.

But yes, tipping started as a reward for great service and frankly needs to go back.

So many people complaining these days, I don't know why. But it would suck to be a celebrity as everyone is expecting you to tip generously and if you don't they'll slam you online.

Our tipping culture has gotten out of control.. the issues..

the service will undoubtedly get worse and that’s a difficult task with so many bozos these days waiting tables.

The prices will explode when restaurants have to absorb more labor costs, leading to a vicious cycle of shitty service at high prices.. of course some restaurants will find the balance but many will fail.. could be a good thing getting people back into their own kitchens more often but that will include misery

He's correct. It's a way for businesses to pass cost to customer. But for servers at sit down restaurants it is so engrained into the business model, I don't think we can change unless prices get much higher.

Tipping at service counters is fricking absurd to me. Why am I tipping at Chipotle? I do it, but I hate myself for it.

He didn't say that. His historical explanation is actually correct. It did start out as a way to basically have free labor and the people willing to take those jobs were often blacks and immigrants.

I think the system now would work in restaurants IF we went back 30 years where you don't get a good tip if you suck. Now it's expected to leave 20% no matter what so why not just bake it into the cost of food and be done with it.
