No doubt. Further proof that people are far more stupid than they used to be. We are devolving.

I say spy...she says "protect"

She's just setting your son up for years of trust and paranoia issues

Why be a sneaky bitch about it?
Tell that wanker that as a condition of having a phone, you will check it on the random. Every 6 months or so, ask for the phone and scroll for a total of about 30 seconds. Hand it back to him. That should be enough for him to keep it cleanish.

it's the same principle
The content is dramatically different. As are the consequences.

Protect him from what? Pussy?

This. Your wife will end up seeing a pic that she probably does not want to see in any way.. This spying won't last long.

You should have a mature, responsible sit down talk about how this is fricking insane.
Or put a tracker on her phone and let her get pissed

It was so much easier growing up in the days of no cell phones and no social media. It is a fine line for parents these days. Why give the kid a phone if you don't have any trust for them. Parents instill the values their kids have but every kid is gonna do some things wrong, it's part of growing up. If your kid is getting nudes on his phone props to him he is gonna be slaying gut soon. Teach him right and this won't be a problem. To think spying is going to stop noodz is crazy. Kids are gonna frick and they are going to frick too early. Your best bet is educate and arm him to face the world the best you know how.

Why not tell the kid that the app exists. THEN, it is simply monitoring.
Doing it secretly is pretty shitty.
I do not have kids. But, friends that do have told their young teen kids that they have to have access to social media, etc (passwords and logins to be able to see PMs). Kids are forewarned that they may be "checked up on" and it is a condition of using the service.
i am not sure where I stand on THAT...but, at least it is up front.

As someone else said, she's doing it to you too.
To your question, I do not know but it's a good question.

Uh, does anyone here think their works emails are somehow private? Monitoring content exchanged between people is not some radical new concept, especially when it involves people's kids.

this
when my daughter is 14, you better be sure I'm going to check up on whatever social media exists every now and then, but I'll be upfront about it
hiding it is really sketchy

no, there is no expectation of privacy for pics sent over the internet to a cellphone owned by a parent and receipt of unsolicited pics from minor is not illegal, but she better make darn sure that she does not forward or otherwise circulate those pics.
Care to cite your sources, counselor?

This.
I went through similar things as a kid. Finding my parents digging through my room and my car. To this day I don't volunteer information to them unless they ask. Having trust in your kid is important for their development. You have to let them make their mistakes and figure it out on their own.

Women just love them some drama and her being able to see every little thing going on in his life gives her that escape
