My parents got $1456 from FEMA. Turns out they didn't have flood insurance, no comp on the car and they lost everything. My mom died of a heart attack 16 days after the flood.

I will be appealing to FEMA on behalf of my dad.

This has been the shittiest 3 weeks ever!!!

Sorry to be reading this. I'll be praying for you and your dad.

Yep. Kind of hating life right now. At least we spent her last week with her and we were with her when she passed.

Thanks, everyone. Just one shitty thing after another the past couple of years.

Did anyone suggest what they should have shown to provide proof of ownership?

Sorry to hear about that. When FEMA came to my house they didn't ask to see any pictures. All she wanted to see was my license and one utility bill. Then I needed to provide her with a receipt saying I rented humidifiers. She walked in each room and asked what I had lost that was not materialistic. I didn't get as much money as I was hoping for. But at this point I would of taken anything. I also lost everything.

I think the problem was with the individual who inspected your parents home, because the person we had was very friendly. He asked for my proof of identification, and insurance papers to prove that I owned the home. My insurance papers were under 2 feet of water for 2 days but I was able to find them and presented him with a bundle of sopping wet paper which he said was good enough because he was able to read what he was looking for. He didn't ask for anything else. He toured the home, asked us a few questions about our losses made his report, and in 4 days I had FEMA money deposited into my checking account.

I hate that this happened to your folks, but seriously, this is government we are talking about here. What do you folks expect?

Just wait until your life is in the balance due to illness, etc. now that they own your health care.

This is only going to get worse.

And if you think they really want to help someone in a red state that pays taxes, you are kidding yourself. There is nothing the current government hates more than those who actually foot the bill for it.

Many people seldom have interaction with the federal govt., but it's a shame far too many have a bad experience when they do.

They went down today to appeal.

They will win the appeal - just sucks that they have to take an extra step when they shouldn't have to.

I feel for the OP, but if you don't want to deal with the Government in this instance people could of bought flood insurance. Yes I realize flood insurance is by the government too.

But the main reason so many are dealing with the government and FEMA is because they decided against the private company and paying for insurance. So this is kinda a hard time to be complaining.

But they didn't, so your coming here saying this is irrelevant now, and kicking the elderly when they are down. Stop it.

Hey Purple, is your mom's home the one with the big white columns?

I'm almost fifty. If it gets terminal bad, I'm just going to let nature take it's course and then have Nurse Ratchet hold a pillow over my head until I hit the happy hunting grounds. Cheap, simple and there is a certain symmetry to it.

You'll win the appeal. Hopefully you already have SBA ball rolling bc they seem much more organized. SBA can help in a pinch until FEMA works itself out. I received $25,000 for 11 years at 1.6 for contents only with the only stipulation that I carry contents with my flood until paid off. I have 60 days to decide whether to sign or you can pay back at any time without penalty. I probably won't use it but it's nice to know I have quick access if needed. Good luck.

It's because the primary area hit is hard working people and they know the people will help each other out and get through this. Let this happen to North Baton Rouge, a city like Atlanta or Memphis and the money would pour in from FEMA.

When your federal land surveyors say the area you live in is not a flood plain area why would you buy flood insurance. Personally I think homeowners should file lawsuits against them for improperly classifying areas as non flood zones. Govt is f'ning over a lot of people right now.

This is an "easy" fix assuming your parents can talk to the right person (good luck with that) and it will take time and energy to fix.
