Yes, which is why we should all be OK with cops immediately arresting anyone even suspected of having an alcoholic beverage within the past 24 hours. I don't even think such people should be allowed to go to court or have a lawyer. If people are faced with automatic jail time of at least five years with no chance of overturning the sentences, they'll think twice before drinking and driving, or hell, even driving.

This should make the fatality rates plummet.

Because, that's the case now? Get real. This is a serious issue and you think it's a joke. Typical.

I honestly don't think that is the case.

This is, I think, most everyone's issue.

Especially when you get stopped by a horse's arse cop. It becomes less about "protecting and serving" and more about making $$$$.

I understand this is personal for you. What happened to your family was terrible and it shouldn't happen to anyone. I am truly sorry for your loss.

Thanks, I didn't experience it personally, but my dad was overly protective us growing up because of the issue. He was a casual drinker until then and hasn't touched a drop since. He freaked out the entire time we were in college/high school and even now as adults. It is truly a life changing experience.

Just "a point?"

No, I don't think it's a joke. I think it's pretty sad all around.

He did the card-with-the-eye-test. Rude attitude. He looks at my license and orders me to drive off the shoulder to an area off the street. "What the hell for?" I asked. "Your license is expired and we need to write you up." he said.

Was he a 6ft 4ish fat bald white guy with a waxed shiny head?

Then why arent the checkpoints and key intersections leading away from bars?

They're always past an exit into a neighborhood in the middle of the night.

Those arent the guys killing families in drunk driving accidents.

It is very disheartening. I look at these statistics quite a bit from a data analysis standpoint and it's truly heartbreaking.

In South Carolina alone, 300+ will die this year from DUI's. It sucks and it sucks worse because it could be prevented. I don't know how, but there is an answer.

In addition to that, studies say checkpoints are very inefficient and extremely expensive.

Would love (and hate) to know how many of these are repeat offenders.

There is. I've already given it to you in this thread.

For starters, if you have a DUI on your record, you should have breathalyzer thing to start your car. But even that has serious opponents.

No one has a right to drive drunk IMO.

I can find those numbers, at least for South Carolina. I'll work on it.

That being said, if its a personal issue to you, it will make you sick.

300 people?

In a state of 4.8 million people?

Come on man, if you do data analysis like you say...you know what that is called.

My neighbor (older guy) got a DUI a few years ago. First offense, no accident, and he had one of those blow deals on his car.
He was pretty humiliated by the episode, but he knew he effed up.

It's just not viewed as a serious enough issue, is my biggest problem.

I have a buddy who works for a Japanese company. He was in Tokyo a few weeks ago and went to dinner with their plant manager (a local). They all had 2 beers and the local called them a cab. My buddy was shocked. The local said he couldn't risk it, there is zero tolerance. He would lose his job and face major legal issues. That's obviously not the case here. There is not even a social stigma about driving drunk. It's pathetic.

That seems a bit unnecessary.

300 people is 300 families affected. If it was from tainted meat from a butcher shop, it would be the biggest scandal ever. It's just drunk drivers so it's not even newsworthy.
