re: My company is pressuring me to relocate and I don't want to

do what I did for 4 years, rent a small apartment close to work and go home on the weekends.
I started to ask, but most people in most major markets can't afford a pied-à-terre. A small apartment in DC or Crystal City (where I moved from) costs more than my mortgage. I shopped around for a walk-in basement type deal in the $1100 range and didn't find anything I'd leave my dog in.

The next time will be your last if they really want someone who lives closer in your role.

I think they're communicating that you don't spend enough time at work and/or aren't as responsive as you could be. Tread lightly.
Yep. This is their passive aggressive "HR" way of giving you a last shot to improve your standing at the company before you are either fired or stuffed in a corner somewhere with no promotion potential. The bottom line is if you are spending 3 hours in a car every day, there is no way you are putting in the hours at work that you need to if you are looking to move up in the company. If you like living out in the country, sell what you have and buy land closer to work. That or start looking for another job. I don't see how you can view your current situation as a long term plan.
If you were your boss, would you want someone working for you who shows up tired every morning from a 90 minute commute, who is always ready to bolt out the door to beat traffic due to their 90 minute commute, and who is almost never available on short notice or emergency situations due to a 90 minute commute?

What kind of relocation incentives are they offering?

Why would you want to drive 3 hours round trip every single day???? Barf
The same reasons I have, most likely.
Cities suck. Fresh air and room to move around doesn't.
I do what I want when I want.
Crank the stereo to 11 at 2 o'clock in the morning? So what, there's no neighbors to bitch.
Piss off the front porch.
Let your pets roam free.
Pay frick-all in property taxes thanks to homestead exemption. 2 year inspection stickers and no worrying about the 'Check Engine Light' or smog checks.
I can go on and on and on.

Ding, Ding. Ding.
You're probably not technically doing anything wrong, but your lack of flexibility is likely off-putting.

figure out what the issues are.
try to have all the decision makers in the room at once so you don't have to fit to 4 different people's ideas.
tell them you are on a fact finding mission, and would appreciate not having to answer until you have all the facts.
DONT TAKE IT PERSONALLY. If you are hour and a half away, you can't come in on short notice.
AND STOP USING THE FACT THAT THEY WERE OK WITH YOUR BEING FAR AT FIRST. That's over now. You are not 4 years old.
Someone obviously cares a lot about this or you would not be being PRESSURED.
MAYBE THEY WANT YOU TO LOOK ELSEWHERE.
FIND OUT THE SUBTEXT.
take all the page 1 and 2 answers into account. they cover the bases pretty well. and stop saying, it was ok when I interviewed. its not Ok NOW. Once you accept that its NOT ok NOW, you can deal with it.
Maybe you do have to sell and move closer. IF YOU ARE STUCK, and can't CHANGE, you are going to get to suffer the consequences. You are going to have to change something or they are going to change it FOR YOU.

So, dude bolted 1m after closing and is on his 90 minute commute home. We won't get an answer to this one for awhile, fellas.

Well, let's hope not anyway - for the fellow drivers he's around.
Posted on 10/13/15 at 6:09 pm to Meauxjeaux
Yeah I'm guessing he's the type that if you come up at 4:45 with something to do, he says "I would love to, but I gotta get out of here to beat traffic."

I live less than 2 miles from my job and love it!

What a load of shite. I drive close to 3 hrs a day commuting and put plenty of time/effort in at work. What about people who live in NY, Houston, or any other metro area? You think they aren't spending a shitload of time in traffic? Is their work suffering? Commute times aren't the employers responsibility.
OP, I'd address their concerns professionally and politely but with haste. They might be considering you for a promotion or think you are growing tired of the drive. Assure them that all is well and quit worrying about it. Unless they are going to compensate you for your commute and they don't state its impacting your performance, it shouldn't even be considered.

Good luck with it. Bump the thread after you do some fact finding.
