If you can afford an assistant you can afford to match the 14% Playa

Does it really matter?

Am I the only person who would consider 14% of my income a significant amount, regardless of what I was making?

If I made $1,000,000, and someone offered to pay me $1,140,000 for the same work--why would I scoff at that?

People, generally, don't quit organizations - they quit supervisors.

I'm not saying that's what happened here, but something for you to evaluate for the future.

depends on a lot of factors, are you going from a W-2 employee to a 1099? will vacation, health coverage, 401k, taxes, SS, etc., now be your responsibility?

If you can't afford to give her a 14% raise on what is more than likely not a very high assistant salary, then why should she stay at such a stagnant business?

Anyone who has loyalty to their employer is a sucker. They have zero loyalty to you.

Basically a 14% raise. I could probably come up with something to offer her, but I can't match it.

Well, you probably ly could match it, you just don't want to. So she's either not that valuable, or you're just bitching into the wind here.

And did you even offer something like 10% along with the familiarity of a decade at one place? Do you provide insurance for this person? Details matter.

10% plus 2 extra weeks PTO may have been a good offer also? Or Friday afternoons off every other week. Get creative.

If you value her so much, pay up. 14% is probably a drop in the bucket

Assume everything in your response is identical between employers. Same with location, etc. I’m
not talking about any of that.

Lots of responses here saying or implying that the woman cares about a paltry 14% because she makes assistant money. I can’t wrap my mind around that. 10%+ of my salary would never not get my attention, regardless of what I made.

How much does your assistant make? I'm guessing we're talking about $8k-$12k more, tops.

If you are paying her $20 and can't match $22.80 then your margins are too tight.
