quote:

In 2008, Kutcher and his ex-wife, Demi Moore decided to tackle one of the more serious crimes facing our modern world – human/sex trafficking.

quote:

Kutcher and Moore decided to concentrate their efforts on the Internet, to thwart the trade of the traffickers. They set up an organization called Thorn. Thorn’s mission is very simple: to eliminate sex-trafficking and child exploitation over the Internet. With the help of around 20 technology companies, they set up the Thorn Task Technical Force. Technology companies such as Facebook, Google, Twitter, Yahoo!, Snapchat and Imgur are all part of this task force. They dedicate their time and resources to searching the darker corners of the Internet, hunting out traffickers who have been involving in trafficking innocent people. Since establishing Thorn in 2008, the organization has so far, identified and rescued over 6,000 trafficking victims and captured over 2,000 traffickers

quote:

"As part of my anti-trafficking work, I've met victims in Russia, I've met victims in India, I've met victims that have been trafficked from Mexico, victims from New York and New Jersey and all across our country. I've been on FBI raids where I've seen things that no person should ever see," Kutcher said. "I've seen video content of a child that's the same age as mine being raped by an American man that was a sex tourist in Cambodia. And this child was so conditioned by her environment that she thought she was engaging in play."

quote:

"It's working. In six months, with 25% of our users reporting, we've identified over 6,000 trafficking victims, 2,000 of which are minors. This tool has enhanced 4,000 law enforcement officials in 900 agencies. And we're reducing the investigation time by 60%," he said of a software tool called "Spotlight."

I can't even read that. Such evil in this world. I really appreciate the IT people who have to wade in that scum to catch these animals. That has to cause some mental scaring.

Kutcher really is one of the good celebrities. He's just a farm boy from small town Iowa. There was recently a thread on reddit about people who grew up with people that are famous now and what they were like. Somebody from Kutchers town said he was always really nice guy and comes back to his hometown fairly often and always makes time to talk to people and catch up with people he knew growing up.

Big time Iowa Hawkeye fan too.

This article from Reason is questioning the numbers he is citing. That said, props to him for putting time, effort, and resources to advocate for this. I actually came across this because I was looking to donate.

quote:

But there's something fishy about these and other stats put forth about Spotlight. According to Cloudera, the company behind Spotlight's technology, the app was used in 8,305 criminal investigations into sex trafficking between September 2015 and September 2016, identifying 4,624 adult victims and 2,025 minor sex-trafficking victims (defined in the U.S. as anyone under age 18 engaging in prostitution).

These numbers wildly outpace the average number of new criminal investigations into sex trafficking opened in the U.S. each year or average number of victims identified by U.S. law enforcement. For instance, between late 2009 and late 2015, FBI agents working with state and local police across America identified an average of just 175 minor victims per year, according to the Attorney General's 2015 Annual Report to Congress and Assessment of U.S. Government Activities to Combat Trafficking in Persons.

He owns part of Skype and AirBnb, and gets to have sex with

daily.

He don't need to worry about movies.

That's awesome. I'll admit I rolled my eyes when I saw him testifying. I had no context and no audio, and I just assumed it was some liberal dog and pony show. Didn't know about his efforts. Very glad to be wrong here.
